Taking the fort

It was early morning, so early that it was still dark. We were positioned on the outskirts of the fort, a small battalion of men lying in wait. Dusker was leading the mission, I was joined with Robbis and Karl. Elle along with Mistle was apart of another group in reserve. Once we started to take the fort, the next group would wait to pick off stragglers and cover the rear. We needed to let some soldiers survive to give word back to their army that the fort was under attack.

We had grappling hooks and climbing equipment to scale the walls. Guards were patrolling the tops, looking out for any signs of an ambush. We managed to snipe a few guards without raising any suspicions. We reached the fort, threw the hooks up to catch a biting point to hold onto, we climbed up with the ropes attached. Making it to the top and getting onto the battlements, we kept low. With enough men infiltrated the fort, we organised our surprise attack. We killed men sleeping in their beds, men on patrol inside. It got to a point where the alarm had been raised, but the soldiers protecting the fort were easily overwhelmed. With no casualties, we successfully took the fortress for our own. We let a few soldiers live to give word back.

“Good job everyone.” Announced Dusker.

“It shouldn’t take long for word to get back.” Said Robbis. I saw blood dripping off his hammer.

“Send the word to bring the wagons in.” Commanded Dusker.

The group waited outside of the fort with the wagons, filled with multiple casks of water. This fort looked like it was used as a trade route, two large gates on opposites sides. The large area in the middle had enough room to drop off resources and equipment.

“Right! We need to hurry. The faster we start the better. Let’s get around a mile down and make those lands wetter than a whore’s twat when given a bag of gold.” Shouted out Dusker.

We took the wagons through the next gates, leading them nearly a mile down the open fields. Dawn had started to break, giving us some natural light to work with. We quickly took the casks off the wagon, busting the lids open to spill the contents in the ground. With work from spades, digging up dirt and creating oozing thick mud, we progressed ourselves back to the fort. Day break had shown itself. By the time we have finished flooding the fields, we saw the retaliation of the Brimeo army. Elle and Mistle had bows ready for the command to start the attack.

A small scale army of soldiers marched to the occupied fort. Banners seen in the distance signalling who they represented. We goaded the army to meet us at the fort by firing arrows making them charge at us. By the time they realised that the land beneath them had become a new swamp lands, it was too late. They tried in earnest to either retreat or push forward. Each soldier was met with an arrow, it took a large supply of arrows that we had in abundance to kill the enemy soldiers.

In addition to the swamplands tactic, we had rallied a group to pincer around the enemy to attack them from behind. I was apart of this group, my skills were best utilised in close combat. Any soldiers that had successfully retreated were met by our allies to engage in battle with. The soldiers didn’t last long from this overall strategy and we concluded this battle with a victory, with no casualties.

My great-axe was stating to dull with the many strikes it made during this war. I would ask Elle to help with sharpening it to keep it in good condition. She had picked up some skills of being a blacksmith from her father, and knew some maintenance procedures of weapons.

“Well done everyone! This is sure to damage their morale.” Shouted Dusker. He then addressed me personally. “And well done to you Fen, that was a fine idea. I’ll make sure you’re rewarded for this.”
