Anneke doesn’t think she can take the brute. She darts deeper into the woods, hoping to lose the giant between the trees.

The cyclops stays right on her heels as she darts away. It has her scent and it doesn’t want to let her go.

It swings again, the massive club hitting a tree and gruesomely splintering the trunk. Annake shudders. That could have easily been her torso. She keeps running.

The cyclops’ bulk belies its speed. It keeps on her tail, just a few feet behind the fleeing elf.

It swings again. Another miss. Anneke counts her lucky stars and braces herself for another burst of speed.

Sacrificing her awareness of where she is, Anneke runs blind. Finally, she’s able to pause, breath heavy, when she realizes the heavy footfall of the creature is lost behind her. She looks up. The shadows are beginning to lengthen. She has no idea how long she’s been running for nor where she is. She tries to get her bearings.
