Wrung Out

Katie collapsed on the couch next to her friend, Peter Littleton. They hadn't grown up together, as Katie had grown up mostly in Atlanta, but sometimes she felt as if they'd had, they'd be best friends forever. He wasn't much of a man in that sense, but he listened, and she needed that.

"What did Vega and Vasquez say?" Peter asked, getting her a cup of hot chocolate. She sipped it gratefully. She still had the taste of Big Kelvin in her mouth.

"They said I'd regret not cooperating. That they'll charge me," Katie said, tilting her head back. How to get out of this? Peter swallowed.

"You need to break this story soon," he said. "You're running yourself ragged out there. And half the time you look high."

Katie nodded guiltily.

"You need to go to the top. Show him what you're capable of. And then get that evidence when you have the chance. But you don't have much longer."

She nodded. Peter wouldn't want to know what she was willing to do to get that evidence. She needed Big Kelvin's boss.
