Chapter 72 by SmallestStories SmallestStories

A chaotic proposal ?

But not what you thought of.

After you answered Zeromus, his smirk disappeared from his face, as he suddenly took a serious expression, something that you did not like one bit. He then said.

"I am sorry to announce it to you like this, Adam, but your journey will most likely end here."

This declaration made all five girls tense up suddenly, all the while it stunned you, leaving you with one big question, that this time, you weren't afraid to ask, somehow.

"Wait a second." You start, conscious that you were speaking to the one who brought you to this world. "Why would my journey end here ? I haven't really done anything yet !"

"Because the God of Balance has set his sights on you, and gave me a simple ultimatum : either I make you disappear from this world, by any mean necessary, or he takes care of it. For Balance itself to be this hateful towards a being such as you, Earthling, I could not let him do so."

Remember how you were stunned before ? Now it looked to you as if you were turned into stone, unable to move an inch, to even look away from Zeromus. This announcement served to fuel your confusion, as you still didn't have any idea of why you were so special, apart from the fact that you didn't belong to this world. But then, Zeromus added.

"This ultimatum is the sole reason why I stand before you in this particular instant. I do not wish to see you disappear from this world, as you will be needed, soon enough. Yet I cannot either **** you to stay, if you want to run from this world at some point. This is why I want to make an offer to you."

When Zeromus finished speaking, a portal appeared to your left, its blue border encasing the view of a world, a strange world, with constructs such as cars, trucks, and others. With buildings going up in the sky, grazing it by their immense size. These were named skyscrapers, you believed. But why did you remember this all of a sudden ? Because you used to live there, maybe.

This realization made your jaw drop, as you faced a portal leading to your home world, a world that you didn't fully recognize, from which you had only few memories, none of them being of you living in it, yet a world that you knew saw you be brought to life and grow up.

On your right was... Something else. It was a small orb, that felt similar to the card Zeromus first gave you when you arrived into this world. It was pulsating at a slow rate, yet even you could feel the power emanating from it.

As these two things appeared, you felt like the room became empty, devoid of anything, of any sign of life, apart from you, the God of Chaos, the portal that he created and finally the orb. Zeromus then said.

"My offer is the following : You have the possibility to either go through this portal, leaving our world behind, getting back all your lost memories all the while keeping the memories from this world as well as everything that you gathered in your time here. Or you can stay in this world, leaving behind your home world, and embracing what will be your future, for better or for worse. If you do so, I will grant you some help, the most I can do for now."

You opened your mouth to answer to this offer, yet nothing came out of your throat. You tried to move, but you found yourself unable to do so. The only thing that made you have a reaction was the low plea of Allit, who said.

"Master... What is happening ? Please, don't leave us behind..."

It was the first time that you've heard Allit's voice so uncertain. She who usually was, as far as you know, sure of herself to the core, now showed a surprising vulnerability. It elicited tears from you, as you stood there, letting them accumulate before coursing down your cheeks. In the beginning, right after Zeromus presented this offer, you were sure that you wanted to go back to your world, even with the uncertainty brought by your memory loss. Yet, Allit's plea shaked your mind. How were you able to forget, for even a second, that you lived there, that you had an home and friends who care about you as much as you care about them.

Zeromus' offer quickly started to tear you apart inside. Leaving your home world, or leaving your actual life ? How could you even answer ? It was up to you, yet you felt like this was an insurmountable dilema. As Zeromus patiently waited for your answer, you turned around, to see the five girls, all in a scared state, even Kogai and Melda, which made you wonder just how close you got to all of them in such a short amount of time.

This view was also what inspired you to finally take a very deep breath, before turning back to face Zeromus, as you answered.

"I would rather die than leave my home world behind..."

You started by saying, eliciting a little curiosity from Zeromus.

"... But my life is here, as well as the ones that I hold dear. So whatever might happen, I choose to stay there."

An extremely hard choice to make...
