They were middle class successful. Adonis, the owner of three gyms. Elizabeth, the very fit former beauty queen. It should be an American success story on its own. But Adonis aspired for more, and Elizabeth's motivations followed her husband.
Yet it was difficult to find financing. Despite the kumbaya that racism was a thing of the past, the experiences of Adonis and Elizabeth to get a loan proved to the contrary. The cashflow was there, the business model was there, but it was a risk, and Elizabeth knew that they either needed a partner for the project that was as vanilla and white as she was to comfort the bankers ... or to find a Black financier to help them out. Either way posed risks.
