Chapter 5
by atapoti
You have to make a decision quick.
Hide under the bed
You have to do your best to avoid a senseless fight. The goblins outnumber you, and with your lack of experience in fighting, you'd be at a disadvantage. But simply diving under the bed won't be enough. You grab a blanket off the top of the bed and wrap yourself in it before crawling under the bed, looking like nothing but a pile of cloth.
You hear the creaking sound of the stairs as the pair of goblins climb the steps. You stay as still as you can, your heart beating fast.
"There is nothing up here," you hear one of the goblins from outside the room. "They just sent us up here so they can have all the good stuff to themselves," he complains.
The goblins pace a few steps into the room, their feet making the wooden boards of the floor squeak. "Wait," one of the goblins exclaims. "I smell something." You hear him take a couple of loud sniffs. "The scent of a human woman!" Your heart skips a beat at his statement. You clench the blanket with your fingers and huddle further into it.
"Right here," the goblin says. You feel your shoulders shivering uncontrollably, waiting for them to be grabbed any second. "It's still warm!" the goblin follows up, sniffing deeply several times as if smelling something. You blink a few time, slightly confused by what the goblin said.
"We came up here for a stinkin' dress?" the second goblin says. "The orcs must have taken the wench already, leaving behind nothing but her rotten clothes."
You realize something. Your dress! You had discarded it on the floor, and it must still be fresh with your scent.
"Who cares, it smells wonderful," the goblin who's smelling your dress replies to the other goblin.
"Shut up," the second goblin says. You hear him open a few drawers and say, "Nothing here but damn rags! Come on, we're through up here."
"Alright, but I'm taking this with me for the trip." You can hear the goblins taking heavy steps to exit the room.
"You can do whatever you want with the damn thing. I won't take your new girlfriend away from you," one of the goblins says in a fading voice.
You wait a few minutes before you feel sure the goblins have left the upper floor. You quickly shuffle out from under the bed and breathe a sigh of relief. Your dress saved you. If it hadn't thrown off your scent, the goblins would have surely found you.
Now you have to escape the house quickly, especially with all the goblins roaming on the floor below you. The stairs down were out of the questions. The window in the upstairs bedroom caught your eye, however. You quickly make your way over to it.
You examine the window. You should be able to fit through it. What's more, the window leads to a piece of roofing that you can walk on. Looking further out the window, you can see that the adjacent buildings have roofs low enough that you should be able to make your way across the village via roof tops.
You do not spend even a second over-contemplating the escape route. You slip out the window, spear in hand and begin to move across the roofline. Your footing is a bit unsure at first, causing you to wobble slightly as you walk across the small portion of the roof, but you quickly reach the gap between houses.
You look down into the alley way below. It's a bit higher than you imagined, and the gap between the homes is a bit wider than you anticipated. You hold your new spear tight and take a few steps back in order to make the jump.
"Look! There is one up there!" you hear a shout from some distance away. You look to where it came from, seeing an orc pointing at you from the village below. "Get up there and bring her!" the orc commands others.
You quickly panic. You look back at the gap between your roof and the one next to you. You swallow once and take a few more steps back before making your leap of faith. Your feet manage to land on the adjacent roof's wooden structure. You fall forward a little from the unbalance, but you quickly reassert yourself and begin moving forward. Your new shorts and top give you the freedom to move quickly compared to your old dress.
You try to keep your momentum going as you begin jumping from rooftop to rooftop, moving toward the forest outside your village. You can hear the orcs yelling and hollering as they chase after you on the ground. They have a hard time keeping up due to all the obstructions such as a wagons, carts, stacks of hay, and fences. You slowly begin to lose them, but before you're completely out of their sights, you come to the end of the line of houses. The forest trees are now just a few paces from where you are, but you have to get down from the roof somehow, and quickly.
Your eye catches a stack of hay below you. You make your last leap without hesitation, landing in the soft stack. The fall causes you to be winded, but the yelling of the approaching orcs has you quickly regain your footing. You see them running toward you, so you spurt for the cover of the forest with all your might.
You manage to do it. You dive between the trees and keep moving deeper. The trees quickly become more dense, making you dodge back and forth in order to go deeper. You look behind you to see if the orcs are still in sight. You lose track of what's at your feet and suddenly feel your body fall backwards as you step over the edge of a steep hill.
You start sliding down the hills, the grass and loose leaves giving little resistance. The hill is rather steep and lengthy, but not quite as dense with trees, making it easy for you to maneuver yourself. Eventually you slow to a halt as the forest floor levels off.
You breathe heavily as you look up toward the top of the hill. The orcs are nowhere in sight. You sigh deeply and get up, not willing to waste anymore time sitting around. You continue to walk in a single direction, and before long you come across a clearing with a visible dirt road. It is obvious to you that the road is made for traveling carts from the wheel grooves in the dirt path and the distinct markings of horses' hooves.
You can see the sun above you, and the mountain range in the distance, giving a better sense of your cardinal directions. You even hear the sound of a nearby river in the distance. You take a moment to decide how to proceed.
You can cut directly through the forest to the nearest fortress town. If you follow directly where the sun sets, you'll have no trouble coming across it in a few days. However, the forest has many dangers lurking within it.
You can take the road all the way to the nearest town. However, the route is rather roundabout and will take additional time as opposed to the straight path. You'll also be out in the open, so you're likely to come across both good and bad things.
Finally, you can walk along the river that you hear in the distance. You won't be quite as out in the open, and you won't be moving through the darkest parts of the forest. It should also provide you with a source of food and water. However, you're not sure where it may lead, but you're confident that at least one town or village should exist along the river's edge.
You nod to yourself and decide where to go
