Epilogue (Lipstick LaDonna)
Jane squeezed Katie's hand reassuringly. On the other side, Elizabeth held Katie's other hand, while LaDonna paced in the hallway nervously. The last contraction came, and then the cries of a baby girl. Katie's daughter. Elizabeth's first granddaughter.
Elizabeth never saw Douglas again. She wondered about him from time to time, but as far as she could see, he'd disappeared from the face of the world. But she didn't miss him. His teeming ball of inferiority-complexes and schemes had turned her from a well-off housewife to a minimum wage earning lesbian in the heart of the blackest part of Memphis. And holding her Black granddaughter in her arms, she didn't regret a moment of it, no matter how badly Douglas regretted his choices.
