Take on the sewer slimes

Because she’d done this commission before, Helena simply notified one of the guild secretaries that she had accepted the job and then went off to the specified district’s main sewer line. A couple of guards stood out front, their job to dissuade anyone from entering due to the threat of the slime, as well as keeping it from escaping into the city.

Helena recognized one of them, a brunette guard named Callie. The taller woman nodded in recognition and asked, “Are you on cleanup duty again, Helena?”

“Yes I am,” the mercenary replied.

“Well, you know how this works, so head on in.” Callie waved a hand to gesture for Helena to pass.

As she stepped inside, Helena activated a bit of wind magic around her mouth and nose, a trick she’d learned to filter the stench and germs.

With a magical light secured to her head with a bandana, Helena made her way into the sewers. The next couple of hours passed by uneventfully, with Helena searching for the slime.

Eventually, she found a neglected corner and saw a writhing mass of bright blue jelly that reacted to her presence and began to slide towards her.

The slime had a core, a concentrated mass of mana, inside of it; the vast majority of the monster did not feel pain and damaging it did nothing. The slime could freely change its shape, as well as flinging bits of itself towards a target to try to capture them. To defeat it, you had to damage the core.

Helena was familiar with all of this, and considered how she wanted to do it. Would she go for the flashy finish or a more efficient kill?
