Chapter 60 by SophiePert

What's next?

No. Not This.

She opens her mouth to snap out a response but his words actually do stop her in her path. Closing her mouth slowly and narrowing her eyes she actually seems to consider what he's saying, contemplating it and, to my absolute horror, seeing his side of things.

I can tell when she starts to blush that his words are starting to work. So can Blake, taking a step in closer and seizing the opportunity to seal the deal.

And poor Eddie is right there to watch all of this. The guy practically has a front row seat to one particular dream of his absolutely dying. So when he takes a full step back and turn I'm **** to consider what my best path is here.

Do I go after Eddie? He'd started to change and he'd started to get better. He'd started to believe that life wasn't wholly hopeless and I didn't want him to put all his eggs in one basket, but I got the feeling that this wasn't about that.

If he walked away now, it wouldn't be the start of anything all by itself but it would be a whole lot harder to get him back on track. Here he was seeing perfect proof of his world view when he'd actually started to believe he didn't have all the answers. I needed to keep him on that path.

But then there was Rachel. Do I go after Rachel? Do I try to intervene and try... well try to keep her from making an even bigger mistake than the one I was certain she'd made when she first tumbled in the hay with Blake.

I was pretty sure that, whatever happened between the two of them, it would only be a temporary bump. Rachel seemed determined on her path to keep marriage at bay. She didn't want the white picket fence, the happy homemaker life, that I'd lived in that future I caught a glimpse of with Blake and that I was pretty sure he was seeking out here whether he knew it or not.

But a speedbump could still be life threatening for her. And more importantly dallying with Blake would mean giving him ideas. And I liked Rachel far too much to have to watch her fend off his advances the whole time she was in college.

Still given the option between the two, one felt far more pressing. So even as I watched Rachel and Blake get closer I still stepped away, pursuing after Eddie as he stepped away.
