Close to Home

Emily Jefferson looked at the local listings for people seeking to be tutored. She flitted through the listings, bored, until she saw one that needed help with remedial English. Well, that she could do she thought. She was a junior at the university, and not a brain scientist, but certainly able to help a local community college student. She called, dropping her phone when she heard the voice on the other end.

It was a close friend of her stepbrother, Lamont. His name was Jaren Richards. Tall, Black, athletic, he was the homecoming king of their high school, the star athlete, the uber alpha. She had a chance to tutor him?

"Ummm, hi Jaren," she said nervously.
