Atara needs Lux to crawl through a narrow access tunnel.

Atara allows Lux a moment – a literal moment – before ushering her to her feet. “Enough sitting around,” she says, “time to go. The outcasts haven’t been waiting idle while you’ve been sleeping.”

Still fuzzy with fatigue, Lux finds herself following along. Atara keeps up a familiarly brisk pace, leading the way out of the little chapel and into the maze-like passageways of the complex.

Finally she arrives at a metal hatch on the wall, which – with some effort – she’s able to lever open. Beyond is a narrow tunnel, lined with metal, leading into darkness.

“This will take you down to the heart of the Machine,” Atara says. “That’s where – well, I won’t waste a lot of time explaining. It’s what the outcasts are using to make such a mess. Our people are prepared to move in and take back control. But I need someone – you – to open the way for them.”

Lux peers into the tunnel with a vague sense of dread. “And why does it have to be me?” she asks.

“Because you’re smaller, and your joints don’t creak when they bend,” Atara says. “Youth, as always, is wasted on the young.”
