Learning the Basics of Combat

You nod, feeling a mix of frustration and excitement. "Alright, what's first?"

"Footwork," she says without hesitation. "Your foundation. If your feet aren't in the right place, your punches won't land, no matter how strong or fast you are."

She gestures for you to stand up. You do, albeit shakily, and she walks you to a clear spot on the mat. "Watch closely," she says, positioning herself in a classic fighting stance. "Your feet should always be shoulder-width apart. Balance is key. Now, move."

She starts to move fluidly, her feet gliding over the mat in small, controlled steps. "Notice how my feet never cross. Always keep your stance. It's like a dance, but with more intent."

You mimic her movements, awkwardly at first, but gradually finding a rhythm. She circles you, occasionally tapping your legs or shoulders to correct your posture.

"Good," she says after a few minutes. "You're getting the hang of it. Remember, this is your base. Without it, everything else falls apart."

You nod, focusing intently on each step. She watches you for a while, then steps back. "Next, we work on your strikes. But first, we need to work on your breathing."

"My breathing?" you ask, slightly puzzled.

"Yes. Controlled breathing helps maintain your stamina and keeps you focused. In through your nose, out through your mouth. Steady and controlled, even under pressure."

She demonstrates, taking slow, deep breaths. You follow her lead, feeling the air fill your lungs and then slowly releasing it.

"Good," she says. "Now combine the two. Move your feet and control your breathing. Let it become second nature."

You spend the next hour doing just that, moving in various patterns, focusing on your breathing, and gradually feeling more comfortable. She corrects you less and less as time goes on, a small smile of approval occasionally crossing her face.

"Alright," she says finally. "You've made good progress today. But this is just the beginning. You need to practice these basics until they're ingrained in you. Then, and only then, will we move on to more advanced techniques."

You nod wearily, sinking back onto the mat to catch your breath. "I'm exhausted.... and starving."

"Why don't we hit the showers together and grab some food after?" she suggests, a playful grin on her face.

"Sure, why not," you reply casually, trying not to sound too eager.
