Chapter 290 by Leoblade24 Leoblade24

What's next?

The hanger has your ship...most of it

In the middle of the hanger sat your formerly beautiful ship, the Winged Heart. From the door frame, you could see the impact dents along the hull, the gaping holes in the wings, and the damaged paint. The ‘Winged Heart’ print on the bow was so damaged by scorch marks that only ‘*in**d *ear*’ could be made out.

You gape in horror as the one of the gun embankments’ barrels was half melted and pointing inwards towards the forward landing gear. One of the wings had a section only barely attached to the rest. The damage was worse than what you saw in the Cube’s control room.

“What did they do to my ship?!” Katara gave you a gentle shoulder pat as the other victims shuffled into the hanger. The few drones inside were ignoring your group mostly.

“Is it even space worthy?” Laura doubted as she saw a panel fall off the underside.

“She’ll get us out of here at least,” Hera declared as she took out a remote and activated the cargo bay doors. The ramp deployed and people rushed to board with Gwen Tennyson and Alex making sure anyone in need of extra help made it up. Meanwhile, you shook off your shock and ran up to some nearby controls with Mariner, Tendi, and Boimler.

“Unlocking tethers and docking clamps,” Tendi crawled under a console and started rewiring and recalibrating circuits and conduits. Boimler checked various readings and reported the information.

“Hanger doors are opening, and I just realized I forgot to check if the barriers were working,” Mariner commented as an alarm sounded and the distant doors started opening. From the opening, you could see a battle raging outside. You guess even damaged, a Borg Cube is a **** to reckon with.

“The ship should be free to leave,” Boimler reported. You nod at him and help Tendi up from the floor. Distantly, you hear the Winged Heart’s engines light.

“Come on, let's get out of here,” you declare after looking around to see if anything on the Borg side of things could prevent the escape. On seeing nothing immediately concerning, you lead the StarFleet Ensigns towards your ship where Gwen Tennyson and Alex were waiting. You run up the ramp without any issue and see Pixel standing at the top. Once everyone was in the cargo hold, Pixel jumped up and hit the button to close the ramp.

“I’m going to the bridge,” you announce as you run towards the elevator, noting the burn marks on the doors. Mariner, Pixel, and a few others follow you inside.

“How we doing?” You asked, seeing Hera and Sabine working the controls.

“We’re showing yellow across the board but we should be good to fly,” Hera reported as she finished a checklist. You could see several warnings flash on the sparking console. Much like the rest of the ship, the cockpit was in disarray with melted screens and loose wiring. “You better tell everyone to hold on to their butts because this is gonna be rough.”

With almost no warning, the Winged Heart lifted off the hanger floor and you were nearly swept off your feet as Hera punched the engines. Your ship flew towards the hangar bay doors as Hera worked to keep it steady. You screamed as you heard a terrible crunching sound as Hera flew through the doors.

“What was that?” Hera looked back at you briefly before looking at the readouts. There it showed a significant amount of the right wing just gone.

“Nothing,” Hera replied. A moment later, your ship finally breached the end of the tunnel (apparently the hanger had a long tunnel instead of being directly open to the outside). “Here we go!”

You looked out the windows as Hera did her best to rapidly avoid phaser cannons and disruptor array fire as StarFleet, Klingon, and other vessels fired on the cube. “Mariner, can you get them to watch their fire?”

“I think your communications console is on fire,” Mariner said as the fire suppression system took care of the flames.

“Taking evasive maneuvers.” Hera rolled the ship to avoid a photon torpedo and flew under a Miranda class ship while flying away from the Cube. It seems like someone noticed that you weren’t Borg because once Hera flew a significant distance from the Cube, the stray fire lightened up. Now you only had to worry about the Cube’s defenses firing at the ship.

“There should be a secondary communication console by the pool controls, the yellow machinery. We need to get a good vector either back to Risa or a safe dock. We are way too damaged to fight,” you inform Mariner. She looked like she was about to disagree but then looked back at Jessica who was standing with Tendi by the snack bar you had. She nodded but before she could move a bright flash filled the window.

What caused the flash?
