Chapter 96 by Alibara Alibara

What's next?

Ten days later

We make our way to the location.

Unfortunately, it's pouring rain now.

This is the only clue we've found so far... The location of Frankenstein's secret lab...

"Oh, man... Just our luck. It's raining cats and dogs out there." Nemo says.

"Caleb, would you like my coat?" Victoria asks.

"No, thank you. I'm fine. Don't worry." I say.

We appear to be in an abandoned graveyard outside a castle in Germany.

It seems like no one has set foot here for years.

Lupin, Van Helsing, Nemo, Victoria and Doreen have investigated this place together to search for Frankenstein's laboratory.

"A laboratory under a graveyard... Frankenstein sure had a morbid idea." Doreen says.

"Are you really sure there's an underground facility at a place like this...?" Van Helsing asks.

"Yes, it should be here. These graves have been here for a long time." Victoria says. "Since the 14th century, in fact. At the time, the Black Plague had broken out all across Europe. It swept the country, and all told, is believed to have killed a third of Germany's population. Not knowing the cause of the illness, the people fell to worry and concluded it was witchcraft. Back then, the facility beneath this graveyard was a prison for those accused of witchcraft, who were later killed here. It was run by my ancestor, Johann Konrad Dippel. The facility was later expunged from all records by the government as a stain on the nation's history and meant to be forgotten."

"But...his descendant, Victor Frankenstein, set his eyes on it, and had it modified to become his secret laboratory." Van Helsing says.

"Ugh...I mena, it might be a convenient place to work, but how could you set up shop here? It's way too creepy." Nemo says.

"Frankenstein says in the notes we recovered: 'Many were killed here, a tragedy entirely caused by doubt, confusion, and ignorance. It is in this place that I shall start anew. All of humanity's hopes and ambitions will begin here.'" Victoria says. "That's what he wrote. He probably had some reasons of his own for choosing this location."

"Doubt and confusion, the origins of tragedy..." Doreen says. "People feel doubt and confusion, as a fundamental part of their lives. As long as people remain people, tragedies such as this will likely never cease."

I look down at the ground.

"Hey! Everyone!" I found it!" Lupin had been searching a ways away from us when he suddenly calls out.

We run towards her. And we see that one of the tombstones has been moved to reveal a long staircase.

"This is quite a narrow entrance. It must have been something of an ordeal to carry in all the laboratory equipment." Doreen says.

"Maybe there's a separate secret entrance for that somewhere else..." Victoria says.

"We aren't going to learn anything if we don't go in. Let's move." Van Helsing says.

"Caleb, are you ready?" Lupin asks.

"Yes." I say.

"There may be some traps, so I'll lead the way. Let's line up so that our gentleman here is in the middle." With this, Lupin takes a step into the darkness.
