Then she saw the knife at his throat, the blade shining in the light of the morning.

Selena’s heart raced with joy at the sight of Varga as he leant over Marco’s shoulder, still holding the knife.

“I thought you’d been captured,” Selena said as she rose to her feet.

Varga shook his head. “Giuliette lied to you. I’ll tell you more later, we don’t have much time. I have to get you off this ship.”

“You’ll not get away with this,” Marco said. “Neither of you. We’ll track you down. Traitors. How could you, Varga? After everything our family has done for you.”

“We’re not traitors. Giuliette is the traitor. She has lied about everything. She’s a mage.”

“Spare it, Varga. Selena already confessed.”

“I… She tricked me,” Selena said. “She’s not in love with Flavio. She was the one who cast the spell on your father, she wanted the tiara. She already has the orb and the sceptre. She must be stopped.”

“We need your help, Marco,” said Varga. “To save your family.”
