Winded and seeing double from the staggering hit, Lux can do little as the bandit grabs hold of her. She can’t even get enough air in her lungs to shout – not that shouting would be a great idea, since the only people who might hear are other bandits just down the hall…

His big hand closes around her throat, cutting off her desperate attempts to breathe. She stares up at his snarling face, every thought of what he might be about to do to her worse than the one before.

Then there’s a metallic click, and a loud hissing sound. The bandit and the whole room vanish into a dense green cloud. Gas – some kind of poison? But Lux has no breath to hold; all she can do as she feels the pressure on her throat lessen is to gasp in lungful of whatever this is. The bandit loses his grip on her; she hears him stumbling, coughing. Sound and sight fade away, and she drifts off…
