A possible way out reveals itself

Lux isn’t sure how long she lies on the cold, hard flagstones. The collar bites into her neck, a constant reminder of her powerlessness in this situation. She listens in dread for the sound of the bandits coming back, knowing what will likely happen to her next.

Instead, what she finally hears is a subtle click, and she drags her head up to look for the source. On the wall opposite the door she was brought in through, a small hatch has swung open; peering in the darkness, she can just about make out some machinery inside.

Worn-out as she feels, Lux isn’t ready to lie down and die yet. It takes her more than a few minutes to squirm and slip the bonds from her wrists, before she can pick herself up off the floor, wrap herself in rags, and approach the strange panel. Even though there’s nobody else around, she feels the urge to try and keep herself covered up, self-conscious in her sense of exposure and vulnerability.

There’s not much light by which to see the open panel. Poking at it, she finds and trips a small switch, and with a low grinding sound, part of the wall slides open. Another hidden door, maybe one that even the bandits didn’t know about.

What is this place?, she wonders to herself, as – still mostly naked and shivering slightly – she climbs through the new doorway and pads her way down the revealed passage…
