Royal acceptance

As Kael finishes explaining, Evie looks at him. “So…you’re going to be the king, master? And miss Ria the queen?”

Kael nods. “So it seems.”

She thinks for a moment. “And what will that make me?”

Kael shrugs. “I’m not sure. Honestly, with how things looked today, our whole family situation isn’t going to be completely unheard of. I think at some point we may be able to simply call you a queen as well.”

Evie blushes. “I don’t know if I want that, master. I’m happy like I am.”

Gabby speaks up. “Same for me. I can be…your royal gardener, or something, right, sir?”

Ria laughs. “I’m sure we’ll figure it out. You don’t need to be in the spotlight.”

Kael nods. “The main reason Evie may need a role is that she’s the link to Lord Greyheart. Being technically his heir, she’ll lend legitimacy. If you just want to stay back and garden, or whatever you decide, that’s great.”

Gabby grins. “Maybe your highness can help me wash off at the end of the day, sir…”

Kael rolls his eyes. “Well, I certainly won’t complain.”

Ria winks, leaning in. “I think the big guy is downplaying a benefit we’ll all enjoy. The beds in the royal suites are big enough for all of us.”

Evie giggles. “Yay! I like the sound of that, miss Ria!”

Kael chuckles, shaking his head. “Interesting priorities, but I get it. I’m just glad you’re both on board with this.”

Gabby reaches out and puts her hand on his arm. “Seriously, sir, it’s incredible. Coming with you after…the battle was one of the smartest things I’ve ever done. I’ll follow you anywhere, if you’ll have me.”

Kael smiles at her. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Ria grins. “Awww, you two are so cute. You’re such a softy, big guy!”

Evie hugs him tightly. “That’s what makes master so great! Hard on the outside, soft on the inside!”

Kael rolls his eyes. “You sure that’s how you want to phrase that, Evie?”

Evie giggles and nods. Ria laughs, leaning in again. “Speaking of…I know we’re supposed to be celebrating the freedom, but do you two mind if I steal him? I’d like a bit of the queen treatment from my king.”

Gabby laughs. “We already had a bit of fun this morning. It’s only fair you get a chance!”

Kael looks at the three grinning women. “I’m guessing I don’t get a say in this.”

Ria shakes her head as Evie slips off his lap. “No chance, big guy. It’s your duty as future king!”

Kael laughs as she pulls him to his feet. “Well, I wouldn’t want to fail in my duties!”

Ria pats his cheek, winking at him. “Good choice. Now come on, I need it.”
