For Elizabeth, who'd at least visited Dubai, the heat was still a startling revelation. For the rest of the wives, the heat made them almost want to crawl back to South Carolina. It was only their faith, and the dominance and leadership of their men, that kept them as one unit. They stayed in a ritzy hotel for a month, balancing the hardship of a different country with the extravagance that that same country offered, until the finishing touches were placed on a compound well outside the city, where they would all reside.
