Chapter 53

Does her plan work?
At first, but some cleanup is required.
(Still With Natalia)
She panted, having nearly spent all of her mana again after that attack. 'Come on, please work. I don't see another way to deal with this.' As she silently begged for her plan to work, the roof of the cave began to collapse. Everyone around paused, including the monster, as they watched the cracks spread across the roof.
At last, the roof of the cave gave in and fell upon the creature. A cloud of soot filled the air as the rocks seemingly crushed the gigantic monstrosity. The party waved the soot from their face, coughing as they tried to see if the enemy was truly dead. As the dust cleared, all that was before them was a pile of rubble.
Silvia was laying just past the edge of it, still clutched in the last remaining visible limb of the Abomination. She was panting heavily, staring at the pile of rocks before her with a shocked expression stuck to her face.
After the moment with everyone stunned was over, Oliver rushed to Silvia to help her out of the creature's grasp. As Grutrod came up to Natalia, something didn't feel right. 'I don't know why, but I am certain that something is wrong.'
Then came a shout from behind them, "Watch out! It isn't dead yet!" Natalia's heart dropped upon hearing Matthew's warning. 'Not dead? How is it not dead? It had a cave fall on it!' Sure enough though, the rocks began to rumble as something moved beneath them.
The Abomination's "head" rose out of the rubble before letting out an even more drowned roar, sounding as if it had gained some fluid in its lungs on top of its previously wet sounding noises. The party was momentarily stunned before the arm clutching Silvia began to move, springing them all back into action.
Oliver tried to cut at the malformed creatures limb, but it made little reaction to his sword slashes. Grutrod did his best to get its attention, but it seemed focused on Silvia, slowly dragging her up to its face. 'Its moving slower, it is definitely damaged. I just need to think of something to take it over the edge, but what?'
Just then, Matthew called out, "Stall it for a moment if you can, I have a spell that might work for this." Natalia turned around to see him standing up shakily. She felt a deep sorrow for forcing him to come to their aid, 'How can I rely on him after I let him get hurt? I feel like I have failed him.' Regardless, she heeded his words and did her best, using some tiny spells to make it stop for a few seconds.
She heard him behind her, beginning an incantation, when she felt a familiar sensation. The mana being pulled towards something, this time she was certain, it was him. 'Then was that feeling before him casting a spell? I had thought it was the Abomination, but it doesn't make sense. I know this is growth mana, but even the mana in me is being pulled to him. Why does this mana obey him like this?' She didn't have time to question it as she battled to keep Silvia out of the horrid beast's maw.
At last, it seemed Matthew's spell was finishing, as the mana began to take a near physical form. It formed into a green light in the shape of the symbol on his mask, floating in the air above them. The Abomination looked towards it for a moment before it was struck by an immense beam of power coming from the eye of the image.
Natalia could see it roaring, but it began to disintegrate and soon there was nothing left. The arm holding Silvia dropped to the ground, having been severed from the main body. Matthew fell back to a kneel, and Natalia rushed to his side.
She couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right, but now wasn't the time for that. "Are you okay? What was that?"
Matthew gave her a tired chuckle and smile, "If you mean the spell, it was a highly powerful smite my god gave me for emergencies. If you mean the monster... I'm not certain." She found herself not believing him for some reason, no matter how much she wanted to. 'Why does something feel wrong? He was attacked by a monster and still pulled through his injuries to help us kill it. But why can't I shake the feeling that there is something more to this.'
The others regrouped as well, Grutrod coming up and giving both of them an aggressive pat on the back. Matthew let out a cough and Natalia winced; them both being worn down from spending so much mana. "Yeh two did good. I doubt we would've been able teh handle that had it not been for the both of yeh." He let out a hearty laugh.
Natalia still couldn't shake that off feeling, and Silvia calling out in shock didn't help. "Hey, wait, what is it doing?" The party turned to look immediately, to witness the remains of the Abomination seemingly rapidly decay into the soil. Natalia knew the others couldn't tell, but it had dispersed into mana. 'What? It wasn't some mutant? Then what was-' A horrible thought crossed her mind, 'No, it attacked him, and I doubt he could have summoned something like that. That is just a foolish idea, not worth considering. I would rather be wrong by not suspecting him of something so outlandish than falsely accuse him of summoning some monster. It doesn't even make sense, how could he have killed the bear before we even got here?'
She continued to battle herself in her mind, fighting against a possibility she was certain could not be true. She would not believe that the first person she had felt that way about in so long would be some monster.
... Let's hope she doesn't find out, yeah?
