Chapter 107 by Jpyric Jpyric

What could this be about?

The future

Lord Greyheart leads them into a familiar room, the same room where Kael learned of Evie’s parentage. He can’t kelp but feel a twinge of nervousness, knowing the purpose of this room. Proofed against scrying magic and other means of spying, this room is only used for sensitive information. Still, the relaxed smile on Lord Greyheart’s face as he sits is a relief. Bernal stations himself by the door as Kael and Ria sit across from their lord. Ria discreetly slips her hand into Kael’s, and they share a glance. Kael can see his nervousness reflected in her eyes, but she smiles at him before focusing her attention on Lord Greyheart. Kael does the same, and the king of the fledgling nation sighs as he leans back in his seat.

“Kael and Ria. I always thought you two were quite the pair, despite your reservations. I’m glad to see you together again. And not just you two. Evie as well. And…Gabby is her name, correct?”

Kael nods. “Yes, my lord.”

Lord Greyheart chuckles. “Always formal. I won’t even try to change that. So. I assume you’re wondering what we’re doing here.”

Ria nods. “It is an odd thing to be pulled aside like this, Lord Greyheart. It must be important.”

He chuckles. “Important. Yes, that’s one way to put it. It involves the succession.”

Lord Greyheart leans forward, folding his hands on the table. “As I said in my speech, I must choose a successor. I have no heir.”

He looks at Kael. “Although, that’s not entirely true, is it?”

Kael blinks, then nods. “Evie.”

Lord Greyheart smiles. “Indeed. Evie is my daughter, and technically, therefore, my heir. But even with the response to freeing the slaves today, there’s no chance the people would accept an elven queen so soon.”

Ria shakes her head. “There would be a revolt. Too much change too fast.”

He nods. “Exactly. However, there is another option. What if she were to inherit indirectly? Say, for instance, through her lover?”

Kael blinks again, stunned by the insinuation. “You mean me, my lord?”

Lord Greyheart chuckles. “Well, I actually mean both of you. I would like to name you my heir apparent. The two of you would rule once I step down.”

Kael shakes his head. “My lord…I’m honored, but…are you sure? I’m just a warrior. I’m no leader.”

Lord Greyheart smiles. “A few years ago I would have thought the same. But I’ve been trying to push you gently in a direction. Leading raids, heading up missions. Even taking in Evie was a test of sorts. A test of character. You passed, by the way. Surpassed even my highest expectations. I knew it had to be one of my champions. Orin is too young and brash, though his lamia companion seems to be changing him for the better. Koa is a brilliant warrior, and a kind and wonderful person, but leadership is not in him. And Bernal…Bernal has other obligations. It has to be you two. Strong, smart, wise and just. It can only be you two.

Kael looks at Lord Greyheart, still a bit stunned. “I trust your judgment, my lord, but…this is a lot.”

Lord Greyheart nods. “Of course it is. But with Ria at your side, I know you can handle it. Between you, there is nothing you can’t handle.”

Ria speaks up. “And what of Evie and Gabby?”

Lord Greyheart smiles. “Well, my daughter will lend legitimacy to your succession. And she will aid you greatly, with her mental powers. As for Gabby…she seems lovely, and good hearted. I only see good in her.”

Bernal chuckles. “And don’t discount the use of having some pleasant stress relief around.”

Lord Greyheart rolls his eyes, but smiles. “Yes, that too. Bernal knows a few things, it seems.”

Kael ignores the banter. “I understand your logic, my lord, it just feels like a huge step.”

Lord Greyheart nods. “It is. Which is why I’m going to ease you in with a few tasks. The first begins tomorrow. For now, go celebrate. I’m sure you have some excitement awaiting at home. Tomorrow morning, we begin teaching. Agreed?”

Lord Greyheart reaches a hand across the table. Kael hesitates for a moment, and then takes it. They shake, and Lord Greyheart smiles. He does the same with Ria, and then nods in satisfaction.

“I know it’s a lot to think about, but I’ll be here for long enough to ease you in. Now, go celebrate. I’ll be doing the same.”

He and Bernal share a glance and laugh. Kael and Ria stand, and Bernal opens the door. As they leave, Bernal puts a hand on Kael’s shoulder.

“Don’t worry, lad. You’re the right choice. You and Ria will do well.”

Kael nods, his mind a mess of emotions, and heads out the door.
