Beta Beta Chi

They weren't a sorority. They were a 'social club.' And in the beginning, it was frustrating. Despite the presence of three hot trophy wives, there was little interest from anyone in Beta Beta Chi.

"I've heard they are mudsharks," one boy whispered as he and his girlfriend scurried by.

"I've heard they don't even believe in Jesus," another girl said to her friend, as they practically fled.

And so it went. Eventually, Allie came in to relieve Julia.

"How's it going, Elizabeth?" she asked.

"Not well," Elizabeth replied, scowling. "Just a lot of bad talk and people steering clear."

"You're handling it all wrong," Allie said, rolling her eyes.

"And how would the Magnificent Miss Allie handle it?"

Allie narrowed her eyes, scanning the crowd of university students.

"What made you pick Yusuuf?" she asked, still focused on the crowd.

"I was in a marriage that was only happy on the surface. I was unsatisfied in my faith, in the bedroom, in the kitchen. I was going through the motions," Elizabeth answered, almost too honestly for her own comfort.

"Exactly. A lot of these students believe they're genuinely happy. It takes time to waiver. So you need to catch some that are not quite so mainstream. Hey! You!"

A redhaired 18 year-old freshman bashfully approached.

"Yeah?" she asked.

"What's your name?" Allie asked.

"Lindsay," she replied back. "I'm a freshman."

"How cute. Where are you from, Lindsay?"

"Umm ... low country. Dad was a farmer."

"Bet it's hard being a freshman from the country at a big university. Made lots of friends yet?"

"N-n-not really."

"Well, we're Beta Beta Chi. Not a sorority. No hazing, I promise. We're a social club of wives here in town that would love to take a young flower like yourself and show her all the world can offer. Why don't you come over to the Marlin later, and we'll buy you dinner?"

"Ummm ... that's awful nice of you, but you are strangers ..."

"Nonsense. We'll go to a public place, and have a nice meal, and if you don't like us, we won't have hard feelings. And it'll be just us ladies."

"Ummm ... well, I g-g-guess."

"Hook, line and sinker," Allie whispered into Elizabeth's ear with a smirk.
