"No problem, sir," Mike says. He pulls out his wallet and fishes his fake ID from its sleeve. He holds it up for the man who squints at it and grunts. Ali also flashes him her ID.

"I was here last night when the body was found," she informs him tartly.

"All right, fine. But you - get out," he says, pointing at Daisy.

"Hey, c'mon, man, she's just helping out. It's not like we're drinking," Mike protests.

"No, it's ok, Mike!" Daisy says. "I'll hang out outside. Maybe take a look at the alley. Just come find me when you're done!"

"Be careful!" Ali calls as Daisy retreats out the door. The other girl just gives her a cheery wave.

The man folds his big arms over his chest. "So, whattaya want, exactly?"

"Like I said, I was here last night," Ali says. "I wanna know what's goin' on and if it's safe to even think about comin' back here. That girl's body must've been out there for ages to be like that - what, you people don't even look in your own back alley?"

The man scowls. "Listen, lady, I hire good people. Every day they're out there clearin' trash and keeping the riff-raff outta there. No one was there last night when Tom opened."

(Spending her hold to ask, "What happened here?") Ali frowns. "So, what? You're just saying this woman wandered into your alley, lay down, and someone came and put mushrooms on her?"

"Not exactly, but that's pretty much right on the first part," he growls. "I got a camera back there, same as on the front. That woman came into the alley movin' like she was drunk or somethin', then she collapsed. No one else came in until Tommy went to take the trash out at closin'. Whatever happened, it happened natural. That's what the police said when they looked at it."

Mike leans forward. "Yo, I'm Mike. I'm like a...a pathology student at St. E's. When Ali told me about this I was kinda like, 'Shit, man, what if that's some kind of nasty fungal infection?' D'you think we could look at that video? Because the police might be right that it's, like, 'natural,' but I doubt they know the right way to deal with it if it's something contagious."
