The prude part 6

Maggie’s ringtone calls her to her phone. Once again she feels Mason’s gaze on her body as she leaves the water and waddles over to her bag.

“Yeah, Hello?” She says. “Hello?Mom? Is everything alright? Damn, I have no connection in here!”

She grabs her towel and wraps it around her before heading to the gymnasiums entrances. She sneaks outside and hides in one of the bushes near the front door.

“Mom, are you alright?”

“No, it’s Liz.” Her mother cries. “It’s Elizabeth… They… they found a truck and-“ her mother couldn’t finish the sentence. “Hey Maggie, dear. Are you alright?” Now her father is in the phone. His voice seemed tense. “Dad? What’s going on?”

She heard him sigh. “They found a crashed truck today. The passengers all died. One was your sister. The police is still investigating-“

Before he can continue Maggie hangs up, shaking like a leaf. She wants to go back inside but breaks down at the first step towards the doors and cries.

Everything since then seemed to happen in a flash. Mason came out looking for her and found Maggie on the floor. With the help of the other they got her back to her dorm.

The next morning her phone was full of messages.

Maggie stayed in bed that day. And the day after that. On the third day her friends came by to say their condolences and found Maggie hadn’t moved at all.

They helped her shower and eat and promised to come back the next day.

That night Maggie looked over to Liz’ empty bed and got nauseous. After puking up into the toilet, she made a decision. She wanted to live in the moment like Liz’ did.

Liz’ didn’t die thinking about tomorrow. She died having fun with her friends.

Maggie messaged Mason and asked him to take her to the lake, before returning to bed.
