Chapter 5 by SpyralEye SpyralEye

Does Chris' Wish Come True?

Yes!

The next morning, Chris Harper woke up to the smell of coffee and bacon. It was very nice, to be sure, but it took him a moment to realize it was wrong. Only he and his daughter lived in this house, and there was no way Shay (in her current state) would actually be up before him and make breakfast.

Unless...

Disbelievingly, Chris looked at the strange ring on his finger, snuggly fitted next to his wedding band, before getting up and heading downstairs, finding a wonderful sight to greet him.

"Oh, morning dad." His daughter greeted him with a small smile, working the stovetop with a bacon on one pan and scrambled eggs on another.

Chris could not believe his eyes, but there she was. His daughter, happy and healthy and whole again. Her hair was wash and cut and combed, neat and perfect, neck-length like it always was. Her face was clear of acne and she had miraculously shredded all of the extra weight, returning her to her usual svelte body. It was, it was... magical.

There was no other logical explanation to it. Chris continued to stare in silence, agog, only briefly turning his eyes towards his new ring.

While his stolen glance to the ring was not noticed, Shay was all too aware of her father gawking at her, turning away and blushing. "Okay, dad, you can stop now. Jeez, way to make a girl feel self-conscious."

"Um, sorry." Chris said, quickly busying himself by getting a cup of coffee. "Sorry. It's just... well, this is a very pleasant surprise, sweetie. After last night, I didn't expect-"

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Trust me, I'm just as surprised as you are." Shay said, back turned to her father, scooping bacon and eggs onto two plates. "But, I dunno, I suddenly woke up real early, couldn't go back to sleep, but... I just felt tired of being sad. I don't know how to explain it, but I just want to be happy again."

Realistically, Chris knew that was vaguely possible. Shay may have just had a personal and emotional epiphany, that's what changed her, not magic. But... no. That wouldn't explain the air or the lack of acne or the sudden loss of weight. That was truly magical. That was... the ring.

And himself. He had wished for his daughter's happiness back...

"Well, I'm just happy to see you like this again, sweetie." Chris said, as Shay served him a big plate full of bacon and eggs with toast as well. Really, that's all that mattered. Chris knew he should have done something more practical to help his daughter, but it didn't matter why she was happy, just that she was. Still, he did apologize slightly by saying, "I just wish I could have been more help when you were... like that."

Shay just waved him off with a smile. "Dad, honestly... you did more than enough. I know you must have been hurting too, losing mom and seeing me like this, but you never once lost your cool with me. You gave me all the time and space I needed to get my head back in order, so thanks. If anything, I should apologize for being such a burden over the last year."

"Shay, honey, you're not a -" Chris caught himself, seeing that the two of them were about to be stuck in an apologetic loop. "Look, I'm just happy you're feeling better. Nothing else beyond that matters to me, okay?"

"Hmm, yeah. You're right, dad."

For the first time in nearly a year, father and daughter had breakfast together in the Harper household and it was a wonderful time. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, the two just talked while they ate, but it was that mundanity and stability that made it so great. Then, Chris cleaned up and the two got ready for work and school; it was an entirely normal, straightforward morning, free of anxiety or dread.

"Well, have a good day at school, Shay." Chris said to Shay, just before they departed for the day. Shay replied with a shrug and a wan smile.

"Hmm, yeah, thanks dad. We'll see..."

Right, right. Obviously, with her being in such a funk, Shay's school life was rough and her grade were starting to slip. And by "slip", Chris meant "plummeting sharply into the abyss". Hopefully, an improved attitude could fix things, but still.

Then, Chris remembered, he had a better solution than hoping and praying. He lifted his right hand, purple gemstone sparkling on the Ring of Desire. He could guarantee the best life for his daughter after such a right period.

And what sort of father wouldn't do that for his darling daughter.

"I wish my daughter had a great day at school!"

And, once more, the ring grew warm and shone, it's hunger slowly building...

What's next?
