Chapter 9

So where do you go now? Isn't it time to start hunting?
You begin the hunt. You will use every means available to you to kill the wolves.
You consider the information you have learned. The logical conclusion: you will have to confront more than one cruel beast. You will have to hunt a large pack of wolves.
After visiting the old woman-healer, you go to the local forge and buy three iron traps. (unfortunately, more traps were simply not on sale). These traps will be useful in reducing the mobility of wolves.
You soon leave the village to begin tracking down a pack of wolves.
You went to the wooded area north of the village. Your experience clearly indicated that this wooded area was the most suitable habitat for a pack of aggressive wolves that was terrorizing the villagers.
You think: “A lone wolf... Some kind of rabid beast could live in some cave near a wooded mountainside. But the number of attacks is too high. And witnesses describe the different appearances of the beasts that attacked. All this proves that the problem of this village lies in the attacks of a large pack of cruel beasts. It won't be easy for me. But I’m ready to kill a lot of wolves if necessary.”
To be honest, you will have to admit that you are apprehensive due to the large number of potential opponents. However, you try to convince yourself that with proper planning you can kill all (or most) of the wolves in this pack.
You have reason to expect success in your hunt: you have extensive experience hunting wolves; you have the skills of a forest pathfinder; you will use not only weapons, but also additional means (traps, potion of Meribela); you are well prepared and equipped.
Well, if you manage to complete the task and eliminate the threat to the village of Olinsford, then you can proudly say that your nickname “Wolfkiller” has received yet another factual confirmation.
After a couple of hours of travel, you notice that the surrounding area is changing. There are fewer hills, rocks and mountain paths around. You see more and more trees on your way. This is a wooded area with a predominance of coniferous pine forest. Tree branches are covered with snow.
You walk along a small path that runs between trees and snowdrifts.
Among the large pines and spruces, whose branches are covered with snow, you try to discern signs of the presence of wild animals. If an aggressive pack of wolves lives here, then the chances of noticing tracks are quite high.
Indeed, after half an hour of searching, you notice traces of forest animals. These tracks are almost completely hidden due to snowfall. But your keen eye allows you not to lose sight of these traces.
You approach and examine these tracks.
There can be no mistake. These are wolf tracks. The size of the marks is quite normal.
Another ten minutes of searching...
Another string of wolf tracks a little further to the east. These tracks are more recent.
And it was another wolf. The lines of tracks do not intersect.
You make sure that you have chosen the right area to stalk. The targets of your hunt live here.
You think: “The flock is somewhere nearby?”
It's about 5 p.m.
It's not dark yet. If you manage to prepare an ambush and lure out the wolves, then there is a chance that you will kill them. You decide this is a good plan. You will kill the whole pack of wolves.
You need to find a suitable place.
Soon you find a small clearing. Several large trees on high ground. These are three spruces. One of the spruce trees has a powerful wide trunk (wider than your back!). It's convenient for you. You can stand with your back to the trunk of spruce - then your rear will be protected from attacks from behind.
You go around the clearing and you place traps in the most advantageous places. Three iron traps are now installed near the bushes from three directions of possible attack of beasts.
Then you stand with your back to the trunk of a large spruce tree. You grab your bow from your quiver and you nock an arrow.
You make a long howling sound.
You imitate the calling howl of a seasoned male wolf.
This is one of the sophisticated techniques of experienced hunters: luring wolves to an ambush site that contains prepared traps. Usually, for wild beasts it becomes the place of their ****.
A long wolf howl...
It is no longer you who makes this sound...
Your assumptions that the pack of wolves is somewhere nearby were justified.
Wolf howl...
Again…
Much closer now...
You are inspecting the area closely. An attack can come from several directions.
Strong impact on your hearing.
It's the wolf howl again. But now there is more than one wolf howling. There are at least three of them.
Perhaps you should do something else...
After all, they are soon...
You don't have time to finish your thought.
Two large wolves appear to the right and left of the clearing. They jump out of the shadows of the trees.
Their sharp, predatory eyes look in your direction.
In a split second they got their bearings and saw you. However, for the wolves your presence was clear long before visual contact. Wolves' powerful wolf sense of smell is sure to attract them as well as your imitation wolf howl. The animals sensed the smell of a lonely victim. And the animals quickly run here. Their desire is obvious: to tear your body apart and devour the bloody pieces.
However, not all so simple.
The wolf, rapidly running towards you from the left, suddenly stops. He lets out a whine of intense pain. His paw fell into one of your iron traps.
You react quickly: your arrow flies in the direction of the second wolf (he is now more mobile and more dangerous).
This wolf almost reached you. The speed of animal reflexes allows him to move quickly. A little more and he will jump and sink his fangs into your body.
But…
The wolf doesn't succeed.
Steel pierces the flesh of a wild beast. You accurately shot an arrow in the direction of the wolf's head. There is a gaping wound in the wolf's throat. His body falls. A copious stream of blood pours more and more onto the snow. The wolf's body convulses in agony.
A new arrow on your bowstring. You attack quickly. A wolf caught in a trap cannot escape. You kill him by shooting an arrow through his body. The arrow probably pierced his heart.
There was another wolf corpse in the clearing.
You take the arrow out of the quiver again.
You are ready to kill new wild beasts.
Loud wolf howls are heard from all sides.
Continuation of the bloody confrontation. Will you be able to survive?
