The Fruits of Success

"We got an email," Antoine said, with Elizabeth beside him, soaking up the last rays of the summer. "They've accepted our offer!"

"Oh! Antoine!" Elizabeth exclaimed, giddy. Now that they'd sold the restaurants, they had put a bid on a plot of land in Jamaica. They'd been on pins and needles over the last couple of days, haggling over the smallest, dumbest things. And then they'd been ghosted for a day. But it was all over now. They'd achieved their success, their American dream. And now they were going to spend their early retirement in paradise, in a custom-built home with million-dollar views of the ocean. Antoine kissed his wife, deeply, passionately, knowing he'd made it in every way possible.
