Chapter 94 by Jpyric Jpyric

And that’s enough, for now.

Group gathering

Despite the mixed emotions, there’s an air of excitement as Kael and the others get ready for the big announcement. Kael has donned his rarely worn ceremonial uniform, and belted a sword to his hip. Ria is dressed similarly, and has eschewed her usual paired axes for a more suitable saber. Evie and Gabby wear dresses, although Gabby in particular looks a little uncomfortable in one, much preferring more casual attire.

Still, all gathered together, they are an eye catching sight, and their passage towards the palace draws attention. The streets are crowded as people head towards the plaza for the announcement, but upon seeing Kael and Ria a path quickly clears. Kael can hear murmurs as they pass by, unsurprising considering that it’s rare to see the champions dressed so formally.

They arrive at the palace at the same time as Koa, the giant man nodding in greeting. His orcish companions smile, leaning against him in matching black dresses that do little to hide their well sculpted bodies. Heading inside, Kael sees Orin has already arrived, along with his exotic lamia companion. They appear to be having a quiet conversation, and Kael is surprised to see Orin holding her hands gently as they speak. When Orin notices the group approaching, he releases her hands, instead slipping an arm around her waist. The lamia, who Kael recalls is named Lyssa, is wearing something similar to what she wore at the celebration festival, though slightly more subdued. Still, she manages to make attire that would be lewd on any other woman seem regal, simply by her bearing.

Ria grins at Orin. “Well well, aren’t you a cute couple. Has the wild child finally been tamed?”

Orin rolls his eyes. “You’re one to talk, Ria. Heard you had a fun evening with a certain elvish woman. Have a good dinner?”

Evie blushes, but Ria only grins wider. “Better believe it. And the dessert was…delicious.”

Orin is about to retort, but he’s interrupted by Bernal entering the room, alongside Lord Greyheart. Kael briefly wonders why Bernal has never taken up with a companion, seemingly staying by Lord Greyheart’s side at all times. In fact, he’s never shown any interest in being with anyone else, as far as Kael knows. Could it be that the two of them are more than just good friends?

Kael dismisses the thought. It’s not his place to speculate, and even if it were true, it’s their business. He’s certainly not in any place to judge, as he stands there with Evie, Ria and Gabby close by.

Lord Greyheart speaks, pulling Kael back to reality. “Today is a banner day, my champions. And I welcome your companions as well. After today, many things will change.”

He sighs. “What I’m about to do will set the tone for our new kingdom. Though my rule will likely be short, I hope that I can set an example for the future.”

Lord Greyheart smiles, looking over the gathering. “No matter what else happens, know this. Each of you is important to me, and I want nothing but the best for all of you.”

The champions share a glance of confusion. This seems like a strange thing to say in this situation. It’s supposed to be an announcement of the formation of a kingdom, nothing controversial. Why is Lord Greyheart acting like something bad may happen?

Lord Greyheart smiles again, seemingly sensing the confusion. Unsurprising, considering his magic. Still, he doesn’t elaborate, instead taking a deep breath.

“Let’s not keep the people waiting, shall we?”

And with that, he turns towards the door leading to the plaza.
