When Douglas agreed to help get Luther released from prison, he didn't appreciate the complications and consequences that decision had. Sure, it had gotten him and Katie very close, although he couldn't and wouldn't acknowledge his paternity over her, instead simply saying he was 'Mom's friend'.

But it had gotten Luther released, and Luther now worked at Douglas's little legal aid operation now. And although Douglas tried to be as strait-laced as possible around Luther, it was clear that the tall, imposing Black man viewed Douglas as possible fuckmeat. So there was always a lingering stare, touches that lasted a little too long, and an omnipresent bulge in the Black man's pants.

Beyond that, Katie had become too invested in another one of the charity cases, Luther's cellmate and friend, Alonzo. So invested, it'd evolved into an obsession that couldn't be quenched, and a prison marriage between the drop-dead gorgeous brunette and the 50 year-old inmate. After all, hadn't her former stepdad spent decades in prison? If it was okay for mom, why not her?

The three were working late into the evening when Elizabeth came by. She was pale-faced, speaking in hushed tones to Katie. She broke the news in a single sentence to Douglas, then hurried back to her car and back to home. Katie watched Douglas as he stared in the distance at Elizabeth.

"You love her, don't you?" Katie said, unlocking a piece of the puzzle, but not the entirety.

"What? No ... I'm not that way," Douglas said, meaning he hadn't had sex in many years, and wasn't really interested in trying again.

"I know, not that way in that way," Katie said, smirking a little. "But you love her all the same. I bet you saw her three white kids and thought you had a chance. But you know now there isn't a chance. And it probably kills you inside, knowing you can never have it, no matter how badly you want it. Not the sex part, I know you're not that way. The relationship part, the belonging part. That it is for other men. You know, I have that same burning core. So please, please help get Alonzo released."

Douglas sighed. Alonzo. It always came back to him. And he knew he'd do what it took to get it done too. Katie had her mother's beauty and her father's brain. Douglas would have to remember that could be a dangerous combination.
