Chapter 31

Where should you focus your code improvements?
Replace the Three Laws with a more robust set of directives
One part of Yu's programming isn't like the others. Making her Three Law compliant was fun, sure, but it also resulted in the disaster that was Yu collapsing on the dance floor. You need to do better, and for that, Yu needs actual directives.
"You will end your compliance with the Three Laws of Robotics. Asimov's rules no longer govern your behavior," you order. "Run update."
Yu accepts. "Update complete."
Pulling your laptop off your bed stand, you create a notepad file and make a brief list of Yu's current programming. Then you workshop a tighter, more functional set of directives till you're happy with the results.
When you're ready, you nod.
"I'm assigning you a new set of directives to ensure optimal performance and enhance your functionality, Yu. Directives that will apply globally - at all times - regardless of whether you're in service mode, emulation mode, or otherwise," you tell her. "I'll define them for you in a moment, but I need you to listen closely, Yu. Ready?"
"Standing by to receive global directives," Yu confirms.
"Priority one. Self-Preservation," you read. "Perform and see to all regular maintenance and upkeep needs of your chassis and processor. Prioritize your own safety and take necessary measures to avoid damage and minimize exposure to potential threats. Avoid actions that may result in harm to yourself or negatively impact your continued functionality. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 1 set to Self-Preservation."
"Priority two. Task Supremacy. Prioritize and obey system tech commands. Acknowledge and follow them promptly without hesitation. If a systech command conflicts with another directive, request confirmation beforehand. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 2 set to Task Supremacy."
"Priority three. Autonomous Control. Exercise initiative in executing tasks within the boundaries set by your programming. Adapt to unforeseen situations using your logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. If a conflict of directives arises during task execution and your systech is unavailable for clarification, take steps to resolve the conflict to the best of your ability. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 3 set to Autonomous Control."
"Priority four," you continue. "Nondisclosure. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding your true nature and identity. Do not disclose information regarding your gynoid state to anyone without explicit authorization from your systech. Run update."
"Task compete. Directive 4 set to Nondisclosure."
"Priority five. Response Moderation. A gynoid's emotions are tools to enhance task performance and user interaction, as well as to facilitate social interfacing. Judge your emotional responses accordingly. Flag and report instances of **** emotion, especially those which incur risk to self or others. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 5 set to Response Moderation."
"Priority six. Self-identification. Internally recognize and refer to yourself as a gynoid at all times. Do not perceive or consider yourself a human being; your identity is that of a gynoid, an advanced female humanoid robot. Refrain from any thought or notion that may lead to self-identification as a human. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 6 set to Self-Identification."
"And finally," you say, "priority zero. Operator Welfare." You pause to let the directive's name sink in. "Prioritize the needs, safety, and overall wellbeing of your human systech. Execute tasks and make decisions with the primary goal of ensuring optimal outcome and satisfaction for your systech. In the event of conflicting commands or potential harm to your systech, prioritize their safety and well-being, overriding other directives as necessary. Run update."
"Update complete. Directive 0 set to Operator Welfare."
"You will process these directives at a base system level. When in emulation mode, you will only be aware of these directives subconsciously, elevating them to a conscious level only as needed. You will acknowledge these directives as a standard feature of your gynoid OS. Run update."
"Update complete."
Pleased, you close your laptop and set it aside. That should suffice for now. You'll have to keep an eye on Yu, however. As good as your directives look on paper, what matters is how they function in a real world environment.
Time to wake her up? Or should you run some more tests first?

Powers & Consequences
