I hear whispering in the night

Our room is crowded again for once, with the eight of us plus our new comrades. It’s late in the night. I’m laid up in the corner under an old blanket, facing the wall. No matter how hard I try, I can’t fall asleep, knowing what we need to do. Everybody else is asleep, as far as I’m aware, but I haven’t moved or looked up in a while.

The sound of whispering catches my attention.

“So what do you think of our new comrade?”

“Which one, the girl?”

“Of course the girl, tea drinker!”

“Quite a bit of charm, she has.”

“Charm.” Clarke laughs quietly. “Supple, round, shapely charm.”

“Reckon I’d fancy a shag with ‘er too.”

“Who wouldn’t? She’s a Betty.”

The two of them laugh.

“You know what the hottest thing about her is?” I hear Clarke ask.

“What’s that? Her long legs? Firm arse? Her face?”

“All perfect, but no. Her accent. She has the hottest accent I’ve ever heard.”

“You’re right about that. I love listening to her talk. I can’t understand half of what comes out of her mouth but I could listen to her all day.”

“After the war, I’m gonna take her home and marry her.”

“Not a chance. I’m gonna take ‘er back to London and put a baby in ‘er little cunt. I don’t think your mother would approve of her anyways.”

“Why not?”

“Too dangerous.”

“She is a fiesty little thing.”

“Enough of your wet dreams for now. We still have a problem to solve.”

“You’re right. Have you given it any thought?”

“I have. And I have formulated quite the plan. We’re going to use our new comrade’s feminine charm to our advantage. She could be quite the distraction.”

“You’re pretty clever, Hobbs. That’s what I like about you.”

“We’ll go over all the fine details tomorrow, but for now, we should try to get some sleep or these Russians are going to run circles around us tomorrow.”

“You have a good point. Good night, you British son of a bitch.”

“Good night, you yankee bastard.”
