The Intern
It was a listless period for Douglas. Faith had sent a note to him, in her writing, telling him she'd fallen in love with her Arabic suitor, and that she was divorcing him. He showed up at work, staring vacantly at the wall until there was a knock on the door.
"Mr. Lancaster?" the human resources director said. "You said you wanted to see the new intern."
"Oh, yes," Douglas said, absentmindedly. A pretty young Indian woman came in. She was 5'5, with dusky brown skin, small breasts and long black hair.
"Hi," she said perkily. "I'm Reena Patel."
"Hi, Reena," Douglas said, shaking her hand. She spoke with a lilting British accent. "Tell me about yourself."
"Well, I grew up in India, but I went to college in Britain. I wanted to add an MBA, so I came out here to the University. And I saw you had an opening, and I have some time this summer." She was fidgeting and nervous, Douglas observed.
"Your background is more business," Douglas observed. "Why come to a law firm?"
"It's ... complicated. My dad was a ... how would you say it? A whistleblower, back in my native India. And he ended up taking the fall for it. So I believe in education, first and foremost. But justice is also important to me. And I believe you're a man that also wants justice, from what I've heard."
"Well, welcome to the firm, Reena. Looking forward to working with you."
