Kaori Picks Sci-Fi (Meek)

The pick of movie had been Kaori’s idea, as it often was. When you entered the theater, she announced that she had been following the development of a sci-fi movie named Beyond the Veil: Interdimensional Soldiers since it was announced at Comic Con a few years back. It was an adaptation of a graphic novel she’d read in high school.

Eager to make her happy, you went to the ticket booth and bought two tickets for Beyond the Veil.

“Are you sure, Darling? If there’s something you really want to watch, maybe we can watch that instead?”

The movie was a strange one. It followed an invasion of earth from across “the veil of realities” by a sci-fi army. A retired green beret and his wife, who he met in the service, are **** by plot contrivance to take up arms to save this reality. The army of the Veil included alternate versions of all the main characters. You guess near the start that the movie will end with the main cast in direct one on one combat with their doppelgangers. Suffice to say, you’re correct.

Like many sci-fi movies nowadays, it rested its themes heavily on the many-worlds hypothesis. Arguing that every single different choice split the timeline up. The alternate version of the main character acts as a reflection of choices he could have made. The veil version never left the army and never started a family.

At the end of the story, earth repelled the invasion from across the alternate reality. But, one of the main squad, who regretted a choice to kill someone important to her in the past, fled back with the invaders across the dimensional divide. Meanwhile, the hero and his wife were left all the more confident in their choice to leave the system, having seen what they would have become if they hadn’t decided their happiness mattered more.
