Chapter 31

What will you see on the streets while you are walking to the house you need?
On the streets of Granveith you meet different passers-by. Something makes you think.
You spend about half an hour getting to your goal. During this time, you walk through the narrow streets of this city, which are covered in mud due to the recent rain. The morning sun shines on your face and you cover your eyes with your palm. You keep a vigilant eye on the passing people you meet on the streets. You understand that most passers-by look like poor commoners who may well try to pickpocket. Or even something worse.
While you were walking through the streets, your attention was briefly attracted by one strange man who was loudly and pretentiously telling something to a small group of local residents. You walked past a small wooden stand that this man had climbed onto. He wore a light gray robe and a cheap leather belt. You walked by and you heard fragmentary phrases from the speech of this man, which he addressed to his few listeners.
Before you had gone far enough, you heard something like this: "Good citizens of the city of Granveith! Hear my call! Abandon false superstitions and wild prejudices! Accept pious faith in the Equal Brothers-Deities! Come to this evening's service, which will be held in a new church near the mansion of the earl family Virmund. May the Lord of the Waves and Guardian of the Seafarers - the Great God Orlan - have mercy on us all! May the Patron of Craft and Art - the Great God Alaratos bless us all with his Divine Wisdom!"
Soon, you moved so far away that the words of this preacher became inaudible to you. You thought that this preacher must be one of many who spread the religious cult of Orlan and Alaratos, characteristic of the Sacred Kingdom of Orlania. Since the Kingdom of Morthem is dependent on Orlania, the fact that the Orlanian religion is actively spreading is not surprising.
As you continue walking, you remember what your parents told you about religion as a child (even before you became a servant to the merchant Porberd). Of course, at that time you most likely perceived these stories as some kind of fairy tales and could not take the performance of religious rituals too seriously. However, straining your memory, you recall the stories of your parents about the Ancient Deities of the Forest Expanses: about the cruel and furious god Painal, who punishes for the manifestation of weakness and encourages strength and courage; about the mysterious Mistress Mossy-Weaver, who bestows secret knowledge about poisons and magical herbs; about a strange deity of swamps and forest lakes called Ghaddol, who, judging by the legends, could forever change the nature of his adept and bestow powerful magical abilities; about the mocking and cunning Grinning Fox, who can bless you with good luck or bring a series of bad luck.
There is a memory in your memory of how your father led you to a sacred grove in which one of these half-forgotten deities was worshiped. You were only about 8 years old at the time and you don’t remember which particular deity this grove was dedicated to. But you remember well the religious ceremony in which you had to participate.
You vaguely remember your father's words. He said something like this: “Remember, Elmar, that the heritage in the blood of every person will always influence his destiny! There is something in your blood that will influence you throughout your life! Now carefully repeat my words and mine actions!"
What you said next you don’t remember well. But you remembered very well that your actions at that moment (and the actions of your father) were fatal to the two small chickens that you brought to the roots of the oak tree that grew in the sacred grove.
You remember that, to this day, in provincial forest villages, like the one in which you lived until recently, faint echoes of such ancient beliefs remain. However, you understand that year after year these beliefs are supplanted by the systematically organized Orlanian religion - the cult of the Equal Brothers-Deities. Do you remember how, in your youth, preachers from the Church of the Equally Great Brothers-Deities repeatedly came to your village. You, like the rest of your village, had to attend these sermons and prayer meetings. This is not surprising, since Orlanian preachers traveled accompanied by well-armed and numerous guards. Therefore, you, like many other residents of forest villages in the Kingdom of Morthem, were **** to express your official affiliation with the religious cult of Orlan and Alaratos. However, you personally were skeptical about these religious Orlanian sermons. You were not a religious person and you were only trying to get rid of potential problems that could arise from government officials. Simply put, you usually just said what the authorities wanted to hear from you. And in your mind, you told all these pompous, pompous and pretentious fucks to go to hell.
So, you were walking along the streets of the city and you were thinking about such complex metaphysical topics.
You continued walking through the streets of Granveith. What will happen next?
