Hubert explains that The Mountain Method compound has two sets of buildings: a row of single-floor housing for the students, and a three-story building for Dr. Hawk’s counseling.

“You’ll meet him there,” Hubert says, slowing the car to a stop. He points to the counseling building. “Don’t worry about your luggage. I’ll bring it to your room.”

“Is it a shared room?” Sam asks. “I don’t care either way. Just curious.”

But the truth is, Sam slightly cares. It’s obvious that all men that come to The Mountain Method arrive as heterosexuals, but Sam isn’t ready for anything to happen. Not now. Maybe not ever.

“No,” Hubert says. “You start with a private space. You can decide living situations later.”

Sam isn’t sure what that means. It sounds like if he makes a friend, he could choose to move in with him. But Sam is an only child, so he’s never had to share. A private space sounds preferable.

“Oh,” Hubert says, snapping two fingers. “Please leave your electronics. We will provide devices that limit certain activities and encourage others.”

Sam frowns in confusion.

“What if I need to call my parents?” Sam says.

“There’s a phone in the counseling building,” Hubert says, nodding toward it.

Sam sighs. He pulls his phone out from his pocket and leaves it on the dashboard. He didn’t bring a laptop. It’s a shame, though, that he won’t be able to watch porn on his phone before bedtime.

With a nod goodbye to Hubert, Sam steps out from the car.
