Swearing In
"... to preserve the peace and carry into effect according to law the purposes for which I have been elected," Moses said, finishing the oath. The judge shook his hand, they posed for a photo, and Moses was once again Mayor. Elizabeth sat off to the side, with her new daughter, Sarah. She was dark skinned, and Elizabeth was paranoid people would wonder at the true parentage of her daughter. But many just saw her Black husband, saw her Black daughter, and paid it no heed. The baby cooed at her, reaching for her face. Moses went to the podium.
"I am aware .. painfully aware, that I was the last Black mayor of this town, and I'm still the only Black mayor. But I'll tell you, we're just getting started here. We're going to have a city that thrives on its diversity ... its equality ... its inclusiveness. The people of this town have neglected these virtues for far too long. It's time folk in this city learn to live together, worship together, and yes, even love together -- as I have. I can't wait to get started."
