Chapter 34

What's next?

One question down...

"Because she's a litteral deadringer for her!" The woman replied.

"What...?" Miranda gasped, eyes going wide.

"It's true!" The woman said, "She looked just like her! They could've been twins!"

"Or a clone." Jane commented, "Ugh! As if I hadn't had enough problems with evil clones."

"I guess that's a goooooooooOOOOD LORD! YOU'RE COMMANDER SHEPARD!" The Woman shrieked in excitement. "I'm sorry that I'm only recognizing you now, with your friend making me scared for my life and all. I'm your biggest fan! But... Why are you hanging out with a war criminal?"

"Listen..."

"Veronica."

"Listen, Veronica." Jane said as she placed a hand on the woman's shoulder. "You're not gonna like what I have to tell you..."

Jack sat on the bed of the cell she had been **** into, a small two by two room with a steel blast door and a small window. While only large enough for the bed, sink, and toilet, it was practically The Presidential Suite of a five star hotel in comparison to other cells she had been locked away in. And while she ordinarily would be fuming and ranting that she had gone down so pathetically like a chump, and to Cerberus no less, something else was occupying her thoughts.

"You are just insufferable! I'd actually feel sorry who whomever you actually wanted to marry, if I didn't get stuck with you!"

"Probably because they woke up the next morning, saw who they slept with, and went off to drink away the bad memories..."

"Well, we wouldn't be in any of this mess at all if you hadn't dragged us to that quickie permanent marriage agency!"

"I could have gotten drunk and ended up with Ashley, or Samantha, or Tali, or Joker, or Dr. Chakwas, or - Hell, maybe even a three-way marriage with Shepard and Liara! But no... No! I end up with the one woman in the entire universe who no sane man, woman, or alien would even consider more than just a quick and easy lay!"

"Oh, please! I heard you say earlier that you 'Love' me. Not that I'd ever return those feelings..."

"I was right. You are a mistake. You were a mistake. And you will always be a mistake. And the funny thing is, we both say this is the worst thing to happen to us. I personally mean it, but despite you saying that this marriage is the worst thing to happen to you, in reality, you think it's the best thing. And why? It's because, after this year, you're going die alone. You're going to die alone, unwanted, and unloved by anyone who's not a student of yours or that varren you have as a pet."

Miranda's voice echoed loudly in Jack's head, each word rapidly stinging at her. Miranda's voice rang through the tattooed woman's head once more, but this time, Jack recognized the words as Maria's.

"I mean, how do you know that Miranda isn't just someone who will love you and leave you like all the rest? How do you know that Miranda wouldn't just wait out your marriage and then split, leaving you alone for the rest of your life? How do you know that Miranda isn't just using your body for stress relief?"

"Let me ask something else: In all the time you two have been married, has Miranda ever once told you that she loved you?"

"Why, I bet that if Miranda bursted into this very facility right now, she wouldn't be able to tell the difference between you and one of our clones of you."

"Miranda's different... Right?" Jack asked herself as she laid down on the bed. She furrowed her brow and said, "Of course she's fucking different from the others! She'll be here with Shepard and the others, and she'll wipe that smug grin off Maria's fucking face when she picks me out from those cheap knock offs!"

"I hope..." She thought to herself as she felt herself drifting off.

"Number One?" Xandra said as she entered Maria's quarters while the later was bathing, "It appears that scapegoat you manipulated into tracking down Subject Zero just sung like a canary."

"Eh, I didn't give her much of anything to work with anyway." Maria replied with a shrug. "Just my codename. No location. No plans. No questions."

"So, The Normandy won't be showing up?"

"Not right away, perhaps..." Maria said. "However, I might have to make it a little easier for them. After all, what better way to break Zero's mind then to prove I'm right?"

"And if Miranda does pick the real Subject Zero over the clones?"

"That is why Subject One will be the one we let loose."

"I want every last man and woman out in the field looking for Miranda Lawson!" Liara said over her holo to her agents as the now dressed trio left Tessia on Earth. "Yes, you heard me! We just got intel that our suspect is her doppelganger. If any of you so much as spot a woman that comes close to Miranda's description that is on any planet other than Earth, you are to report it immediately!"

"Understood, Shadowbroker!" The Agents responded as Liara hung up.

Jane looked back at Miranda, the dark haired woman spookily quiet ever since Veronica spilled the beans about the appearance of this "Number One". Placing a hand on the other woman's shoulder, Jane asked, "Miranda?"

"If she looks just like me, then..." Miranda said softly, placing a hand to her mouth. "Oh Lord!"

"We'll find Jack, Miranda."

"How?!" Miranda yelled, "Our only lead was a decoy! We may know what this "Number One" looks like now, but we still have no idea about where they're located or what they plan to do with MY Jack!"

"Your Jack?"

"I... I mean..." Miranda stammered before taking a deep breath. "You know what? Yes. 'My Jack'. She is my wife, so she is my Jack. And there is no way in hell that I am gonna let those monsters harm the woman I lo-"

"If I can stop you both for a second." Liara interrupted, "We might not be able to figure out what they're planning, but I think I may know a way to find the location with the information we got."

What does Liara have in mind?
