Moving Out

Eventually, Douglas and Julia made a choice neither of them liked. Pariahs now in their community, they moved to New York. Douglas opened an office of his law firm there. He reached a quick settlement that gave up most of his assets to Elizabeth, and he wasn't even in the courtroom when the judge signed the divorce papers. He and Julia were living in an expensive city now on a limited budget, and they were both drinking themselves to a stupor at night -- Douglas because he couldn't see Elizabeth rebuild her life with Yusuuf; Julia because of the guilt at what she had done to the idyllic life she had shared with Tom.
