You're fired!

Stacey was sitting in her room, waiting for dinner to be ready. She was mindlessly scrolling through some Youtube videos and some Facebook posts. She had no idea if the choices she had been making were the right ones. It felt if things were moving really fast, yet also too slowly.

She heard the bell of the front door ring, and heard someone open it. That could have been one of her parents, or maybe her brother or sister. The siblings were all evenly spread apart. Stacey was 22, her brother 20, and her sister had only just turned 18 years old.

“Stacey, it’s for you!”, she heard her little sister yell.

Stacey wasn’t expecting anyone, but decided to run downstairs to see who it was. When she came downstairs she noticed it was the mailman.

“I’ve got a registered letter here for, Stacey?”, he said.

“Yes, that’s me.”

The mailman handed Stacey the letter and she closed the door. She wanted to open it quickly, but her little sister kept standing next to her, curious what kind of mail she was receiving.

“Don’t you have something better to do?”, Stacey asked.

“Oh no, I’m just fine right here”, the little nuisance said.

Frustrated, Stacey went back to her room just so she could be alone.

She looked at the envelop, it had the logo of the zoo on it and it was addressed to her. She quickly opened the envelop and read the letter.

Dear Stacey,

We regret to inform you that we will be ending your term of employment with us with immediate effect. Please consider last Tuesday to be your last day of work. We understand that you have decided to assume a different ‘position’ at our company. This new position cannot be combined with your duties as a zookeeper.

You are required to return any of the company’s material, documents or equipment to which you had access during the period of your contract. This includes - but is not limited to - your zookeeper uniform, keys and access badge. We request you do so within 5 business days after receiving this letter. As with all employees, you are bound by our confidentiality and data protection policies.

You will receive this month’s pay in full. Please be aware that this is more than we are required by law. We will provide such payment at the last day of the month.

We would like to thank you for your contribution and we wish you all the best for the future.

Stacey read the letter over and over again. She couldn’t believe it. It was just harsh. She had been such a loyal employee for the past two and half years that she had been working there, and now she was simply being let go with such a cold letter?! It was unfair.

She looked around, to see what kind of clothes she had lying around that were property of the zoo. She decided that to show her displeasure with the way it was handled, she would return them unwashed. ‘That will teach them!’, she thought.

Just when she had calmed down a bit from reading the letter, she heard someone yell from downstairs, “Dinner’s ready!”.
