"Why do you act like such a hard ass all the time?"

"Because people don't fuck with me," said Brianne before taking a drag of her cigarette.

"Ugh, smoking is so bad for you," said Nate. "You need to stop."

"Yes, I need to," said Brianne as she dropped her cigarette and snuffed it out under the toe of her boot. She was not sure why she did that.

Nate took out a pack of peppermint gum from his pocket and offered one to Brianne. She took a piece and started chewing on it.

"Would you ever date a guy like me?"

"No. Sorry."

"Why not?"

"I prefer tough guys. Guys who don't take shit from anyone and can dish it out."

"Oh please stop with the cursing. A pretty girl should not have an ugly mouth."

"Fine, OK," said Brianne, still not sure why she was being so friendly with this wimp.
