You walk away

"We are going," you tell Elena, and the both of you get up from the table.

You prowl around the station for some time. You ask some questions, visit some places, following the hunches that became more of an instinct over the course of your ventures. Finally, you arrive to a place called Earl's Gambit, where just about anyone could find an assignment. Even newcomers like you.

"Neil sent you?" the man asks behind the desk. You recognize him as the Caregiver, as previously pointed out by the others.

"We got here on our own," you answer.

"Oh, well, thought it was Neil," he says. "Well, most of the jobs I got are for people that actually have a chance for completing them. You two sunshines, you don't look the type that would actually return though. Perhaps if you help out with Neil, we might get to the center of things."

"We can handle it," you dart.

"Well then, I might just have something for you," he answers. "There is a science station, in the middle of zetan space, right between two neighboring system's jurisdiction area. Problem is, one retired scientist took it over, cleared the entire thing once he hacked the sentries, and now he is doing whatever fucked up thing he wants to do in there. If you think you are truly ready for everything, you might just be the lucky ones that take the old man down."

"What about the actual zetan forces?" Elena asks. "Couldn't they be more appropriate to handle this sort of thing?"

"They would be, but as I've said, the damn station is right between their borders. If a military expedition is to take place, and it goes wrong, that could end up as an international catastrophe, and we all know how much the zetans are clinging to this loose alliance of theirs. So they not gonna do anything. And the tech is there. Once you clear out the place, our guys can hoard everything back here, and it will be raining telers all over."

"Why don't you guys clear out the place then?" Elena asks.

"That's because we don't know what that old maniac did, and how effective is that what he did. Any ship that goes there, might get evaporated immediately. Or even hacked, and delivered back to the sender with the corpses. That's why nobody else takes it either. You not gonna return. I can give you about a hundred percent for that. But if you do, you can sell as much gear as you can fit inside your ship's cargo hold. Not to mention that you would start to make a name for yourselves. One thing that would certainly make your lives easier."
