Chapter 39 by Jpyric Jpyric

The questions can wait for later.

Dinner time discussion

Today’s bath goes by without any problems, as Kael is left alone while Evie makes dinner. Once he’s all cleaned up, he finds her setting the table, as the smell of delicious food wafts out of the kitchen. Kael has to admit, she is a fantastic cook, on top of her other qualities.

Evie smiles at his approach. “All clean, master? The food is ready!”

What a change in her! The shy, terrified elf that was thrust literally into his arms a few days ago has now transformed into someone much different. No, that’s not exactly right, he thinks to himself. It’s more that her true personality is shining through, and he has to admit that he is truly happy to see it. The smile on Evie’s face warms his heart every time he sees it.

The two of them sit for dinner, and Evie is full of questions about Ria. She doesn’t seem upset, just curious. Kael figures it makes sense she would want to know about the woman he was last in a relationship with, especially considering he’s still very close with her. After all, Evie did just confess her love for him last night. Even if it was induced by post-orgasmic bliss, it doesn’t seem like she regrets it. And Kael doesn’t either.

Kael tells her all she wants to know about Ria, though he leaves out the more intimate details. He can tell she’s curious about that as well, but she’s still too shy to ask directly. She seems happy enough with what she hears, however. There is a bit of confusion when he explains why they broke up.

Evie’s brow furrows. “You broke up because you’re both lord’s champions?”

Kael nods. “It was a distraction from our duty. We found ourselves worried about each other’s safety as much as Lord Greyheart’s.”

Evie shakes her head. “I guess, but…it just seems so sad. You were happy together, right?”

He nods. “Very. It was probably my happiest time. Well, until now.”

Evie blushes. “But master…I don’t understand. How can you just turn off your feelings like that?”

Kael sighs, looking away. “I…we couldn’t. But it was for the best. And we’re still good friends. I would trust her with my life.”

Evie is quiet for a moment. “Well, I'm sorry that happened, master. Perhaps things will change one day.”

Kael shrugs. “Perhaps. But…you’re here now, Evie. The past is the past.”

Evie nods, smiling. “That’s true, master. And the future is always open. Just look at me. A few days ago, I was just an elven ****. Now I’m the daughter of the lord, and in love with one of his champions.”

Kael laughs. “I suppose you’re right.”

Evie nods again. “So who knows what tomorrow will bring, master.”

He smiles. “I’ll try to keep an open mind, then.”

Smiling, Evie stands. “Thank you, master. Now, I’ll clear the table and get your bed ready.”

Kael raises an eyebrow. “Get my bed ready?”

Evie giggles, blushing. “Yes, master. You’ll see!”

Without another word, she starts hustling plates and silverware into the kitchen. Kael watches her go, amused and a bit bewildered.

What is she planning now?
