“That green stone in your backpack…” Surge starts. “Let me have a closer look.” You hand her the stone, and she takes one look at it before jumping into the air in excitement. “Why haven’t you used this yet!? It’s a Leaf Stone! Don’t you have a Gloom or something? C’mon, evolve it into a Vileplume! We can totally beat Brooke like this. My Raichu can easily deal with her Golbat, but it’s useless against the rest of her pokemon. But a Vileplume could take down any of her Rock-types, easy!”

“This is a Leaf Stone!?” you answer in disbelief. “I-I guess I never really thought about what they look like… But how do you know I have a Gloom?”

“Oh, I saw Misty talking about it.”

You narrow your eyes. “What do you mean you ‘saw’ her talking about it? You’re both Gym Leaders, right? You would hear her talking about it, unless…”

“W-Whatever! Now’s not the time for that! Let’s just go beat Brooke!”

Having seen the pokemon she’ll be fighting against, Brooke chooses her own pokemon.

“Go, Golbat, Graveler!”

Ah-ha! She had to send out a Rock-type this time, just like you expected. With Vileplume’s type advantage, you’ll knock it out quickly before it has time to cause any problems for Surge. “Vileplume, use Petal Dance!”

“Graveler, Earthquake!

Before Vileplume can stir up its petals, the ground begins shaking violently. Raichu leaps into the air using its tail, dodging the attack in time, but Vileplume is knocked over and its attack is interrupted.

Brooke is quick to take advantage of your hiccup. “Golbat, use Wing Attack on Vileplume!” Your Vileplume endures the attack, but it’s already looking a bit shaky. “Use Rollout on Raichu, Graveler!”

Raichu’s not the most agile of pokemon, but it barely manages to dodge the attack, putting it in the perfect position for a counter. Surge orders, “Raichu, use Thunder on Golbat!” A bolt of lightning crashes down from above, but misses Golbat by a pretty wide margin. There’s no time for Raichu to aim before Graveler comes rolling after it again. Raichu is **** to reposition, and you quickly notice that the battlefield is split in half, with Vileplume and Raichu both stuck in terrible matchups. Crap! If you could switch opponents, Raichu could zap Golbat out of the air and Vileplume could easily drop Graveler with its Grass-type attacks. But Vileplume can hardly do anything against a Flying and Poison type, and Graveler’s immune to Raichu’s electricity.
