Heather?

Heather.

Impossible red hair and emerald eyes.

To Ethan, she was many things, but most recently, but perhaps not most importantly, she was a very recent wound.

She was, just a few short weeks ago, a beloved girlfriend.

Now, today, she was an unfortunate ex.

Ethan and Heather were together for some years, meeting on the first day of university and forming a fast friendship that blossomed into something more. The process was neither fast nor slow, nor a comedy of errors in which two people orbit each other for such a time to make everybody around them tired of it. It simply happened, and both of them were happy.

Truly, it was good.

But not all good things last.

Some relationships end with fault on one party. Others both. Others yet end with no fault to be had, just mutual understanding that the end of things has come.

This was very much not the last one.

Heather was not a perfect person. She was a good person, just not a perfect one. She had no desire to break Ethan’s heart, she simply did. And certainly, she couldn't have known she would do it the day before his Grandmother died.

What she did was not wholly unforgivable, and had Ethan been in a better place, they may have worked through it.

But that’s not how things played out.

The last argument was vicious. Sour. Emotional in ways that can’t be understood without years of love. Things were said on both sides. Things that cannot be taken back. In his time of pain, Ethan scorched the earth, and Heather returned fire in kind.

Heather may have shot the relationship, but the two of them beat it to **** after.

Ethan longs for her still.

Heather’s feelings, well, are a mystery to be discovered.
