Chapter 8 by Koriandr Koriandr

What did Bruce do?

Go along with the heist, whatever it is she has planned, in hopes of getting through to her over time.

"Alright, Selina. I'll join you," he conceded, trying to keep his voice steady.

"What's the score?"

Selina grinned, her white teeth gleaming in the moonlight, "Only the best, Holly, only the best."

She then leaned in closer to him, her green eyes sparkling with excitement, "We're breaking into the Batcave."

Bruce felt his heart stop. The Batcave. Of course. Damian knew about the Batcave, his mind was creating a narrative that would eventually lead them there. Bruce had to admit, his son had a brilliant mind, even if it was currently misguided.

"That's... ambitious," Bruce muttered, swallowing the lump in his throat. He had to stay calm and go along with it. Damian's mental state was already fractured, pushing him could break him further. He couldn't risk that. It'd be best to gradually try to get through to him.

Selina merely shrugged, the smirk never leaving her face, "If you got the guts, doll."

"I do," Bruce replied without missing a beat, "But we need a plan. The Batcave isn't a building, it's a fortress."

Selina chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down Bruce's spine, "You think I don't know that? I've got it all planned out, Holly."

She pulled out a blueprint from the bag, the layout of the Batcave meticulously detailed, complete with notes and markings. Bruce's breath hitched in his throat as he studied the plans. Damian had recreated the Batcave in perfect detail.

"So are you in or out?"

Selina asked, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

Bruce nodded, his eyes never leaving the blueprints, "I'm in."

"Great," Selina smirked, "Let's steal from Batman."

Bruce knew he was walking on a tightrope. But this was the best chance he had to reach Damian. He was the only one who could save him.

The two latex clad ladies hitched a ride out to the Wayne Estate, locating one of the Batcave's many secret entrances.

"Holly, the first thing we need to do is disable the security system," Selina explained. "Any ideas?"

"I have one," Bruce replied, his eyes scanning the hidden door. His own sanctuary looked ominous in the virtual reality, its shadows longer and more intimidating. He had to play his part perfectly, so he decided to use his intimate knowledge of the cave to his advantage.

Bruce found the hidden compartment on a rock, sliding it up to reveal a keypad. He punched in the password, the door sliding open.

"How did you know that was there?"

Selina piqued a brow, impressed yet skeptical.

"Lucky guess," Bruce shrugged. "The primary alarms shouldn't alert him to our presence now."

With the initial defenses taken down, they stealthily made their way deeper into the Batcave. Bruce, however, was careful to avoid the triggers for the secondary alarms he knew were scattered around. The cats proceeded deeper into the dark labyrinth, eventually coming up on a series of platforms suspended over a seemingly bottomless chasm. His inner sanctum.

"So what're we stealing, Selina?"

Staying in character, Bruce looked around for anything of value. There was a lot of custom made, expensive tech. Not to mention his assortment of trophies he'd collected over the years from defeating various villains.

"Our score is the Batcomputer," Selina murmured, her eyes glittering with anticipation as they approached the massive computer. Bruce felt a surge of apprehension. The Batcomputer was the heart of the Batcave, the center of all his operations. It was the tool he used to save Gotham time and time again.

"Why the Batcomputer?"

"Just doing some creative coding, that's all," Selina purred, her hands dancing over the keys.

Since when did Selina know computers?

An endless stream of numbers fluctuated on the Batcomputer's screens. Upon closer inspection, Bruce recognized the characters as lines of the simulation's code. Brother Eye must have made the in-sim Batcomputer a failsafe. A way to edit the code from inside the world. But why was Selina-Damian trying to edit it?

"Selina stop," Bruce grabbed her by the wrist, pulling her away from the keyboard. She came face to face with him. He wasn't used to being the same height as her, let alone a woman, so his intimidation factor wasn't nearly as effective in this form.

"Tell me what you're doing," he stated calmly.

"Let go of me, Holly!"

Selina yanked her wrist away.

"I'm going to make this permanent!"

"What are you talking about?!"

"This world! I'm going to make this world permanent!"

Selina yelled, her voice echoing in the vast emptiness of the Batcave.

Bruce's heart plummeted. He had feared as much, but hearing it confirmed was something else. He thought about all the people in the real world, their real lives. Damian was trying to rewrite their existence, to trap their minds in this fabricated reality.

"You... you can't do that, Selina. This isn't the real world. This... this is just a simulation. It's not real."

She glared at him, a fierce determination in her eyes. "It's real enough for me."

Bruce swallowed, feeling a lump in his throat. Damian, his son, was so lost, so **** to escape his reality, he was willing to imprison everyone in a digital construct of his own design.

"No, it's not and you're not Catwoman. You're my son, Damian," he said, his voice steady despite the turmoil within him. "We need to wake up, Damian. We need to go back."

"Back to what?" she shot back, her tone bitter. "A world where I'm a some boy? Where you're... you're..."

"Where I'm Bruce Wayne?" he finished for her. "Yes, Damian. That's the world where we belong."

"And what about me?! I am Catwoman! I have all her memories! I am her! This world is my home!"

What happened?
