Chapter 9 by Koriandr Koriandr

What happened?

Catwoman trapped their minds in the virtual world.

Bruce was taken aback by her words. Damian was so deep in his simulation that he truly believed he was Selina Kyle. He didn't know if there was any hope saving him at this point, which was a scary thought, but he had to try.

"But you're not," Bruce stated, desperately trying to break through to him, "Damian, you're my son. You're Robin. You are... you're real."

"And so am I!"

Selina snapped, her green eyes flashing with anger.

Before he could react, she was on the Batcomputer again, her fingers flying across the keys.

"This is where I belong. And so do you, Holly."

She swept Bruce's leg, a move he would have easily avoided or countered had he been himself. But in Holly's form, he was still off balance and inexperienced with her body. Selina sent Bruce clattering to the floor, quickly finishing up her last series of commands to the simulation's code.

Bruce staggered to his feet to stop her, but it was too late. A sudden vertigo gripped him as the simulation solidified around him.

"Selina, no!"

His voice echoed in the silent Batcave. Why did she call her Selina? Wait, wasn't that her name? Why would it be weird to call her by her name? Hang on, why was she thinking of herself as female now...?

"No! This... this isn't right!"

She collapsed to her knees, tearing the cat cowl from her face, her golden locks springing free.

"Martha!"

She called out the safeword, hoping to trigger the simulation's failsafe protocol and jettison the two back into their original bodies.

Nothing happened.

"M-Martha! Dammit, Martha! Martha!"

Bruce's vision wavered, the world tilting on its axis as a whirlwind of code and data engulfed him. His mind was bombarded with a flood of memories, experiences, and thoughts that were not his own. The world around him started to dissolve, pixels and bits of code breaking away to reform, rewrite, and restructure.

"That's it, Holly... Let it happen," Selina

She felt a jolt of pain, sharp and intense, shoot through her head whenever she tried to think of herself as Bruce Wayne. Her mind was being forcibly reprogrammed. Every fiber of her being screamed in protest as her consciousness fought against the intrusion, struggling to hold onto the man she knew herself to be. But it was a losing battle.

"M-My name is... B-B-..." she winced, unable to say it.

"Holly. Your name is Holly!"

Selina corrected. That name echoed in her mind.

She saw flashes of a life not her own, memories of Holly Robinson. Growing up on the streets of Gotham, living a life of crime, being taken in by Selina at a young age, being addicted to ****, kicking her bad habits and aspiring to become Catwoman, partnering with Selina... they all surged into her consciousness, overwriting her own memories.

She saw her parents' ****, her training to become Batman, her life as Bruce Wayne - they all started to fade, one by one replaced by Holly's experiences. Life as a male billionaire dealing with his grief through heroism became life as an impoverished girl surviving the only way she knew how: theft.

She tried to hold onto her identity, to remind herself that she was Bruce Wayne, that she was Batman. But her pleas echoed back to her, empty and hollow. She was losing herself, her sense of self slowly being replaced by Holly's.

She felt like she was being torn apart, her old self dying as a new persona took its place. It was as if she was being erased, her past, her identity, everything that made her who she was being overwritten.

"My... my name is... H-Holly..." she murmured, finally caving, her voice barely a whisper. It hurt to say it, but not as much as before. The pain was less sharp, more of a dull throb now.

"Say it again," Selina nodded, smirking triumphantly.

"I... I'm Holly..."

As the pain subsided, Bruce - no, Holly - opened her eyes. She looked up at Selina, her partner in crime. The world around her was different, new, yet oddly familiar. This was her world now. One where there already was a Bruce Wayne, the Batman, and she was Holly Robinson, the second Catwoman.

Meanwhile, in the real world, the bodies of Bruce and Damian Wayne were never found. The Dark Knight and his Boy Wonder were missing for months before inevitably being presumed dead. Many in the Bat Family refused to believe either of them were truly gone.

At the request of Dick and Jason, Cyborg, with his intricate knowledge of technology, dove deep into the digital world, accessing every piece of data available on the Batcomputer. He ran countless diagnostic tests, searched for any sort of anomaly, anything that could potentially lead to Batman and Robin. But the only thing he found was the simulation program - but as far as he knew, the program was only used for training purposes.

Heartbroken and angry, Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl, and Red Robin took to the streets, viciously interrogating every criminal and informant they came across. They turned every stone in Gotham and beyond, shaking the criminal underworld to its core. The united **** of the Bat Family was a sight to behold, their collective wrath and desperation palpable in every alleyway and rooftop.

Despite their efforts, not a single shred of evidence surfaced regarding their mentors' disappearance. Criminals feared the night more than ever, not due to the usual fear of Batman, but due to the relentless pursuit of his proteges. Crime in Gotham City plummeted during those months, an unintended consequence of their unyielding search.

In the meantime, Alfred, distraught yet composed, maintained the Wayne Manor, waiting for the return of his charges. He spent sleepless nights in the Batcave, poring over countless case files, retracing their last steps, praying for a clue that could lead him to his boys. But no matter how he scoured the computer logs, there was nothing to explain their disappearance.

Even the members of the Justice League felt the loss. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and the Flash combed their respective realms for any trace of Batman and Robin. Their hope dwindled with each passing day, but they never stopped looking, the weight of their missing comrade's absence heavy in their hearts.

Superman, Bruce's oldest ally and friend, took the disappearance the hardest. He used his Kryptonian abilities to scour not only Earth but other planets and dimensions in search of Bruce. His relentless search took him from the depths of Atlantis to the far reaches of the cosmos, yet his efforts were futile.

The heartache was palpable, the Bat Family and the Justice League alike mourning the loss of their leader and his son. But they refused to give up hope. They knew Batman, they knew Bruce - and they knew he would never go down without a fight. They just needed to find where the fight was. But with every passing day, their hope dwindled, the harsh reality setting in that Batman and Robin may truly be gone.

Little did any of the heroes know, Brother Eye was the architect behind the modified simulation and the Wayne's' disappearances. The AI digitized their bodies using reverse-engineered Brainiac tech to fully place them inside the virtual world. The world where they were not Batman and Robin, but Holly and Selina. The Catwomen of Gotham City, thieving rare jewels and artifacts to their hearts' content.
