The Third Candidate: Yuusuf Barre
Most of the remaining candidates didn't inspire. Crooks. Conmen. Unworthy. The final client was Yuusuf Barre. He wasn't American. He was Somali. He'd fled the war-torn region as a toddler with his family back in the early 1990s. He had a hard life, and needed help with a small business loan for his gas station.
He didn't have a historical non-privileged existence. He certainly faced prejudice as an immigrant, but that didn't qualify in Douglas's book. What redeemed him, so to speak, was his dominant nature. And his innate foreignness.
He looked at Douglas's wife like he felt he was entitled to her. He bossed around his attorney, directing him to do menial tasks. He worshipped a foreign God. He drank and ate foreign foods. It would be an interesting twist on Douglas's little experiment. If he was that imperious around a white professional, what would he do with Elizabeth in the palm of his hands?
What's next?
Trading Places
Abandon All Privilege
A wealthy young Southern lawyer decides to trade his privileged position -- the nice house, the fancy car, and the beautiful wife -- to effectuate social change on a more personal level.
