Chapter 23

Do you intervene?
Calm her down
She's hurting, it's obvious to see, and though you don't know the details, this is personal and about a man; someone she used to know. Whatever's going on, she's getting distracted, and likely about to get you both killed. You need a way to calm down this rage, and do it quickly. There is occult magic that can do the trick, but you're not that familiar with it. With time and practice, maybe. There is something that you do know that might get the job done, if she's still got enough sense in her.
You strongly push your hand into her shoulder, causing her to stop. Making a magical gesture with the other, you channel your magical entities through her. She sees what you've seen, the circle of enemies, soon to be outright hostile, and you show her your mental arithmetic. Whether she agrees with it or not, she's aware of where your stance on this is. The beatings stop, and she turns to look at you, than the crowd. I did it, you think, this mess is all over.
Your thoughts proved to be entirely premature. Clodagh wasn't done with her living plaything. She hurriedly, violently hoisted him over her back, and ran to the corner of the room, where a window resided. She charged at it, leaping at it and breaking through the glass. Stunned at her choice of actions, it's not until the weapons come out that you start to chase after her. The jump was longer than you anticipated, as there was a short gap of air before you hit water; which you REALLY didn't anticipate. Looking up at the hole you just vacated, the scoundrels and rogues crowded the area, but none were keen on jumping in after you and Clodagh. You had that going for you. Unfortunately, with all of your heavy clothes, it was going to be a major effort jusst being able to keep your head above water. You look around to see if your wild friend had better luck, to find that she had made her way into an unused dinghy, with her victim dragged along with. It's a large effort to get yourself in with them, but you remind yourself it's strangely a superior spot than you were a few moments ago.
"Alright Triat, I saved your life, something you wouldn't have done for me" Clodagh began "Tell me what I need to know, and we can go our separate lives."
Triat was apparently still **** on water, having a hard cough before he could speak "Saved me? Bitch, the only reason my life was at risk to begin with was because of you. I had a good thing going, no thanks to you"
"Without me, you'd be rotting in a cell, or more likely a shallow ditch." Clodagh responded "Now, where the fuck is my ring?"
"You'd better tell her" You replied more daintily "Whatever baggage there is between you two, I think it's best you put that to the side. Clodagh here is going to get what she's after, and cooperating is going to be a lot less painful"
"Ya ya ya" Triat replied, trying to get water out of his clothes. "I don't have it. I sold it off, to a merchant in town. The kind that likes to move things quickly and doesn't ask questions."
"I imagine that doesn't narrow things down by much. You're going to need to be more specific" You respond. Adding to it, Clodagh begins deliberately rocking the boat, putting the tiefling ill at east
"Hey ey ey! I'm cooperating here! It's the Three Brothers, okay? That's where I sold it off."
"Thank you" Clodagh spoke up
"Don't know why you're so fixated on that thing, crazy bitch. Why don't" He muttered out, though didn't reach the end of his thoughts. Clodagh clubbed him across the face, causing him to lose balance and plunge back into the lake.
"Why don't you worry about yourself" You respond humorously. The rogue cuts his losses and started to swim for the shoreline.
"Well" Clodagh says with a sudden smile "That went well I think."
"Ya, I guess" You respond shakily, "What would failure look like?"
"I don't know. I'm not really the kind to worry about that. Besides, we got what we needed."
"Sure" You respond, worrying quietly about the possible future with this woman "Do you know anything about the Three Brothers?"
"It's a shop, not one I've stepped into before. It has a weird reputation."
"You don't say" you put the brave face on. You look towards the horizon, and see the sun rapidly setting "There's not much daylight left, whatever the next step is, we should probably head to it"
"I've got a thought, but whatever we do, getting to shore is the next thing" Clodagh leaned to the side to plop into the water and head back to the coastline of the lake, leaving the boat rocking side as she departed. You let out a sigh, recognizing that even this short swim is going to be exhausting, and how miserable a night in wet clothes is going to be.
