Chapter 8 by Squick n' Amore Squick n' Amore

What's next?

Esther wakes up

“Jasper?”

It felt like time stopped as my brain was trying to process the voice that called my name.

“Jasper? Is that you out there?”

Coming from the tent was Esther’s soft voice. I scrambled to open the tent, and the sight was every bit as gratifying as I hoped it’d be. Esther’s eyes started at the mess of a man in front of her as she propped herself up. I sprung in and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her in as deep as I could.

“You woke up!” I said, I could feel my eyes stinging from trying to hold back tears.

I could feel her hands gently petting the back of my head.

“How long was I out?” I could feel the vibration of Esther's voice transferring from her torso to mine.

“A couple of hours, I left to get a high-potion since I thought the regular one we used didn't work.”

“Oh gosh, that must have cost a lot!” Concern translated through her voice.

I reluctantly pulled myself away from the hug to take a second to scan Esther's body, making sure once again that there weren't any injuries.

“The dungeon gave us enough loot for our entire party to die happy no matter what we do for the rest of our lives!”

Esther's eyes widened, staring straight into mine as if trying to dig for more information through eye contact. I let the silence sit for a bit longer before I continued.

“I don't know exactly how much we just got, tho, but I'm planning on telling the team regardless.”

Esther nodded silently, seemingly still recovering from the shock.

“That being said, I don’t think they’re coming back today.” I pull open the tent door, showing that it was already nightfall. “So we should get some sleep first.”

I slowly crawl out of her tent after she nodded.

“You gonna be alright?” I said, ready to zip up her door and head to bed myself.

“I think’ll I’ll be fine, I’ll let you know if I’m not.” Esther said, sending me off with a weak smile.

“Alright.” I say, I can’t help but be concerned at her condition, I know there isn’t much I could do right now no matter how much I wanna help.

I walk to my own tent, it’s not nearly as tidy as Esther’s, there was clothes and parts of my light armor scattered around my bed. I took off everything until I was left with a pair of cheap fabric pants and t-shirt. I look down at my attire, it wouldn’t be too much to say I’m wearing a glorified potato sack, but everything is different now, I can finally start living like a human. That dungeon might just be the best thing that will ever happen to me.
