You almost wish there were ghosts or demons, because that would be less horrifying than the alternative: Real persons are doing this to you, using you and abusing you.

While you're under their care, the staff of the asylum are free to do anything and everything to you, as long as you stay alive. You've seen some of the "treatments" your fellow patients have received, and it can get rather filthy.
